Durga Saptashati Katha – Chapter 3: Slaying of Madhu and Kaitabha

The Slaying of Madhu and Kaitabha
In the previous chapter, Devi Mahatmya: The Quest for Knowledge, we learned how Maharaja Suratha and a Vaishya named Samadhi took refuge in Bhagavati Mahamaya and understood her power. Now, we continue that narrative, which describes how the world was freed from the destruction of demons through the manifestation of Bhagavati Mahamaya. This is the story of the slaying of Madhu and Kaitabha, who were symbols of Tamoguna (the quality of inertia and darkness).
Vishnu's Yogic Slumber
After the Pralaya (cosmic dissolution), when the entire world was submerged in water, Lord Vishnu lay in Yogic slumber on Sheshanaga. A lotus emerged from his navel, upon which Lord Brahma was seated. Lord Brahma was bewildered seeing the desolate expanse of water; he did not know the secret of creation and was eager to understand the reason for his birth. There was water all around, and Lord Vishnu was immersed in deep sleep, as if the weight of ages rested on his eyelids. Brahma's heart was restless with loneliness and curiosity.
Brahma thought to himself, "What a wondrous mystery this is! Who am I? Where did this water come from? And who is this great being who lies in slumber? I must know the secret of this creation." He tried to awaken Lord Vishnu, but his penance only deepened Vishnu's slumber.
The Birth of Madhu and Kaitabha
While Brahma was worried about understanding the secret of creation, two terrible demons were born from the earwax of Lord Vishnu – Madhu and Kaitabha. Both were extremely powerful and cruel, and as soon as they were born, they rushed to kill Lord Brahma. Their objective was to stop the work of creation by killing Brahma and establish their dominion over the world. Their roars made the three worlds tremble, and it seemed as if Pralaya had returned.
Brahma, terrified, began to praise Lord Vishnu, "O Lord of the Universe, O Mahamaya, protect me! Save creation from these demons! Who else but you can deliver me from this crisis?" Hearing Brahma's plea, Bhagavati Mahamaya, who was Lord Vishnu's Yogic slumber, appeared. She opened Lord Vishnu's eyes.
The Slaying of the Demons by the Goddess
Lord Vishnu saw Madhu and Kaitabha and immediately engaged in a fierce battle with them. This battle lasted for five thousand years, but Madhu and Kaitabha were not defeated by Lord Vishnu. Both demons were intoxicated with their power and valor. Then Lord Vishnu praised Bhagavati Mahamaya, who enchanted the demons. Blinded by illusion, Madhu and Kaitabha said to Lord Vishnu, "We are pleased with your valor, ask for a boon."
Lord Vishnu replied, "If you are pleased, then grant me this boon: that you both be slain by my hands." Hearing this, the demons were astonished, but due to the illusion of Bhagavati Mahamaya, they could not understand the truth. The demons said, "So be it!" Then Lord Vishnu placed them on his thighs and severed their heads. Thus, by the grace of Bhagavati Mahamaya, Lord Vishnu slew Madhu and Kaitabha, and freed creation from fear. Lord Vishnu filled the earth with the fat (meda) that came out of the demons' bodies, which is why the earth is also called "Medini."
Summary of Chapter 3: In this chapter, we saw how Lord Vishnu, by the grace of Bhagavati Mahamaya, slew terrible demons like Madhu and Kaitabha. The spiritual implication of this is that to conquer Tamoguna, we must take refuge in the Lord. This chapter also teaches us that ego is the greatest enemy, and liberation lies only in taking refuge in the Divine Mother. Now, in the next chapter, we will learn the story of the end of Mahishasura.
