What is Rahu Kaal?
Rahu Kaal is a roughly 90-minute window each day considered inauspicious in Vedic astrology for beginning anything new or auspicious — a new business, the start of a journey, marriage rituals, Griha Pravesh, or a puja. Routine and ongoing work is not affected.
How is Rahu Kaal calculated?
The daytime from sunrise to sunset is divided into eight equal parts. One of these parts belongs to Rahu on each weekday, which is why Rahu Kaal changes slightly every day and in every city as sunrise and sunset move.
Rahu Kaal by day
On Monday, Saturday and Friday it usually falls in the morning; on Wednesday and Thursday in the afternoon; on Tuesday in the late afternoon; and on Sunday in the evening. Because Sunday's Rahu Kaal comes last in the day, its effect is considered relatively mild.
What to do and avoid
During Rahu Kaal you can carry on with daily work, a job, study, cooking and anything already in progress. Only postpone the start of new and auspicious activities.
Remedies
Reciting the Hanuman Chalisa or the Rahu beej mantra "Om Raam Rahave Namah" is considered auspicious during this window. The simplest remedy is to wait until Rahu Kaal has passed before starting something important.
