Kalashtami Vrat – Chapter 1: The Origin of Kalashtami Vrat

Origin of Kalashtami Vrat
Just as every beginning in creation has a profound story behind it, this sacred Kalashtami Vrat is also connected to a divine incident that bowed even the cruel cycle of time at its feet. This story has been unfolding since time immemorial, when chaos and darkness began to reign in the universe.
The Ferocious Dance of Time
It was in ancient times when a terrible crisis loomed over the heavens and the earth. Time itself, which we call 'Kaal', had gone out of control. It neither stopped nor could be controlled by anyone. Its uncontrolled flow was not only disrupting human lives but also hindering the work of the gods. Sometimes, epochs ended abruptly, and at other times, births occurred after centuries. The balance of nature was completely disturbed. A deep darkness of fear and uncertainty spread everywhere. It seemed as if everything was caught in the cruel clutches of time.
Even the gods were troubled by this terrible time. "O Lord! What kind of divine play is this?" Indra lamented to Brahma. "We have never seen such a fierce form of time. Troubled by this, the welfare of all beings has become impossible. We must find a solution, otherwise, this creation will perish." Lord Brahma was in deep thought, and streams of worry seemed to flow from his matted locks.
Lord Shiva's Bhairava Form
When chaos ensued everywhere and no solution could be found by any being, all the gods collectively meditated on the primordial Lord Shiva. They knew that Shiva was the only deity who could resolve such dire circumstances. The collective call of the gods echoed through Mount Kailash. Lord Shiva, who was in meditation, slowly awoke. The waves of the Ganges emanating from his matted locks also became restless with the hint of his anger. Flames of fire emerged from his three eyes, piercing the darkness of the universe. As soon as he heard the sorrow of the gods, his serene form transformed into the fierce Bhairava form. This form was so radiant and terrifying that even time itself trembled. The form of Bhairavanath was dark, fearsome, fierce, and extremely powerful, with flames of fire emanating from his mouth and weapons adorning his hands.
The manifestation of Lord Shiva's Bhairava form was a symbol of the universe's salvation. Seeing his fearsome form, the gods saw a ray of hope. He had appeared precisely to stop the uncontrolled cycle of time.
The Slaying of Time and the Beginning of the Vrat
As soon as Lord Shiva assumed the Bhairava form, he confronted the uncontrolled time that was about to devour the three worlds. Time, with its darkness spread in all ten directions, came before Bhairavanath. A fierce battle began. Bhairavanath was confronting time with his trident and other weapons, while time was trying to control him with its temporal shifts and darkness. However, time had no power against the radiance and valor of Bhairavanath. With his fierce form and infinite power, Lord Bhairava slew time. With his slaying of time, the uncontrolled flow of time was once again regulated. Balance was re-established in creation. The day this event occurred was the Ashtami tithi of the Krishna Paksha, and since Lord Bhairava's form was also dark, this day came to be known as 'Kalashtami'. Thus, for the protection of his devotees and the welfare of creation, Lord Bhairava conquered time, and in memory of this victory festival, the 'Kalashtami Vrat' began, which liberates devotees from the fear of time and grants them fearlessness.
Thus, Kalashtami Vrat is not just a ritual, but a symbol of devotion, valor, and victory over obstacles. It reminds us that with the power of devotion, any problem can be solved, no matter how formidable it may be.
