Durga Saptashati Katha – Chapter 1: Glory of Mahamaya: Introduction

Glory of Mahamaya: Introduction
The wheel of time keeps turning. Ages pass, empires rise and fall. Just like in past ages, the war between righteousness and unrighteousness continues in this age. Today, we begin the first chapter of "Durga Saptashati Katha," where we will learn how Mahamaya, the Mother of the Universe, Durga, alleviates the suffering of her devotees.
The Fall of King Surath
In ancient times, there was a valiant king named Surath. His kingdom was vast and prosperous. The subjects were happy, and there was peace and prosperity in the land. The king was righteous and cared for his subjects like his own children. There was greenery all around, rivers flowed clear, and people were engrossed in devotion to God. However, fate had something else in store. Time moved at its own pace, and a time came in King Surath's life when he had to lose his kingdom.
One day, King Surath was attacked by powerful enemies. His army was brave, but the enemy's numbers were overwhelming. A fierce battle ensued, in which King Surath fought valiantly but ultimately faced defeat. "O Lord! What calamity is this? I have always followed righteousness, so why this misfortune?" the king lamented. He had to flee his kingdom and was forced to live a common life.
The Renunciation of Vaishya Samadhi
At the same time, a wealthy Vaishya (merchant) named Samadhi was also betrayed by his family. Samadhi had spent his entire life serving his family. He had earned wealth through tireless effort and provided his family with every kind of comfort. However, when he needed money in his old age, his sons and wife abandoned him. He was thrown out of the house and began to wander aimlessly.
After the deeds of his sons and the abandonment by his wife, Samadhi's mind became detached from the world. "I sacrificed all the happiness of my life for them, and today they have abandoned me! What injustice is this?" Samadhi thought to himself. He was alone and dejected, and he didn't understand what he should do now. He had no other recourse but unwavering faith in God.
Shelter at Sage Medha's Ashram
Fortunately, both King Surath and Vaishya Samadhi, while wandering, reached the ashram of Sage Medha. Sage Medha was a wise and ascetic sage. His ashram was peaceful and beautiful. The atmosphere there was calm and sacred, bringing solace to the distressed. King Surath and Samadhi fell at the feet of Sage Medha and narrated their woes. Sage Medha listened to them patiently and showed them the path of knowledge. Thus, King Surath and Vaishya Samadhi met, which would later lead them to seek the knowledge of Devi Mahatmya.
Summary of Chapter 1: In this chapter, we saw how King Surath lost his kingdom and Vaishya Samadhi was abandoned by his family. Both, in their sorrow, reached the ashram of Sage Medha. The spiritual meaning of this is that worldly attachments and ego ultimately lead to suffering, and true peace is found only in the refuge of God.
