श्रीमद भागवत पुराण
Chapter 8 of Shrimad Bhagwat Purana — Other Incarnations and the Glory of Vishnu. Descriptions of other incarnations of Vishnu, such as Parashurama and Buddha, and the singing of their glory are presented.

Other Avatars and the Glory of Vishnu

In the previous chapter, we witnessed the wonderful pastimes of Krishna's love and dharma. Through Krishna's divine personality, Lord Vishnu taught the world lessons of love, compassion, and dharma. Now, moving forward, we will remember the other avatars of Lord Vishnu and their glory, who established dharma on earth in various ages.

Matsya, Kurma, and Varaha Avatars

At the beginning of creation, when the waters of deluge pervaded everywhere, Lord Vishnu took the Matsya avatar to save humans and creatures. Appearing as a small fish, he saved Manu from the deluge and imparted knowledge. The sky was blue, but due to the immense expanse of water, the scene was both terrifying and serene. Manu's heart was a mixture of fear and gratitude. He knew this was no ordinary fish, but God himself.

Manu joined his hands and prayed to the Matsya avatar, "O Lord, you are the protector of this world. Your glory is immeasurable. Guide me and show me the way to escape this deluge." The Matsya avatar replied calmly, "Be fearless, Manu. Trust in me and follow the path I show you. I will take you to a safe place."

Narasimha and Vamana Avatars

When the devotee Prahlada took refuge in Lord Vishnu, distressed by the atrocities of Hiranyakashipu, he assumed the Narasimha avatar. Appearing from a pillar, in the form of half-man and half-lion, Narasimha Lord slew Hiranyakashipu and protected dharma. Instead of fear, devotion filled the faces of the devotees. Prahlada fell at the feet of Narasimha Lord and offered his thanks.

In the Vamana avatar, the Lord asked King Bali for three paces of land as a donation and measured the entire universe with his colossal form. Seeing this, King Bali realized Vishnu's infinite power. Bali said, "O Lord, everything of mine is yours. I am your servant, and it is my dharma to obey your command."

Praise of Vishnu's Names and Forms

Devotees praised the various names and forms of Lord Vishnu - Narayana, Madhava, Govinda, Keshava, and Vasudeva. Each name describes a special glory of the Lord. By reciting Vishnu Sahasranama, devotees express their devotion to the Lord. Sitting on the banks of the Ganges, the pandits chanted, "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya." The hearts of the devotees were filled with devotion, and tears of love and reverence flowed from their eyes. They knew that God resided in their hearts.

Sage Shaunaka says, "Simply chanting the name of Lord Vishnu washes away all sins. Salvation is possible only by his grace. Life becomes successful by taking refuge in him." Therefore, one should always remember Lord Vishnu and remain absorbed in his worship.

The Path of Devotion and Liberation

By remembering the various avatars of Lord Vishnu and their glory, we gain the knowledge that he always protects his devotees. In the next chapter, we will learn about liberation and Vishnu's grace, how his devotion leads to freedom from the cycle of birth and death. This chapter will pave the way to moksha and allow us to experience the infinite grace of Lord Vishnu.

Summary of Chapter 8: In this chapter, we have described the various avatars of Vishnu such as Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha, and Vamana. We also learned about the glory of Vishnu's names and forms, and their praise by devotees. This chapter teaches us that Lord Vishnu protects devotees and that liberation is attained through his devotion.
