Shrimad Bhagwat Puran – Chapter 6: Ram Avatar: Victory of Dharma

Rama Avatar: The Victory of Dharma
In the stories of the Matsya and Kurma avatars, we saw how Lord Vishnu saved the Earth from crises. Now, as the cycle of ages turns, Dharma is once again in danger. Hearing the cry of Mother Earth, tormented by Ravana's atrocities, Narayana decided to incarnate as Rama in the house of King Dasharatha of Ayodhya.
Birth and Childhood Leelas of Rama
The city of Ayodhya was filled with joy. On the ninth day of the bright half of the Chaitra month, Mother Kausalya gave birth to a divine child. Such a radiance of तेज (radiance) and beauty spread that the entire city lit up. Along with Rama's birth, King Dasharatha's other wives also gave birth to sons - Bharata, Lakshmana, and Shatrughna. The four princes began to grow, among them Rama was the most serene and radiant.
Seeing Rama, Dasharatha's heart was filled with joy. "O Rama! You are the support of my old age. I hope you will bring glory to the family," said King Dasharatha, embracing Rama. Rama began to receive education from Guru Vashishtha. He soon gained proficiency in archery and weapon knowledge. His childhood leelas were wonderful, reflecting both his strength and compassion.
Sita Swayamvara and Marriage
Time passed and Rama reached youth. Sage Vishwamitra took Rama and Lakshmana with him to Janakpur, where King Janaka had organized a Swayamvara for the marriage of his daughter Sita. The condition was that whoever could lift the bow of Shiva would become Sita's groom. Many kings and princes came, but none could even move the enormous bow. Then, at the command of Guru Vishwamitra, Rama lifted the bow, and as soon as he strung it, it broke.
The sound of the bow breaking spread throughout the universe. Sita placed the garland of victory around Rama's neck. An ocean of joy surged in Janakpur. By the grace of Vishnu, the union of Rama and Sita was an important part of the cosmic plan. This union was a confluence of Dharma and Shakti, which was to pave the way for the destruction of Ravana. Joy also spread in Ayodhya, and the marriages of all four princes were grandly solemnized.
Slaying of Ravana and Establishment of Ram Rajya
After Sita was abducted by Ravana during their exile, a war ensued between Rama and Ravana. Brave warriors like Hanuman assisted Rama. Finally, Rama established Dharma by slaying Ravana. After returning from Lanka, Rama was coronated in Ayodhya. He established a rule based on truth, justice, and Dharma, which is known as Ram Rajya.
In Ram Rajya, no one was unhappy or deprived. The subjects were happy and prosperous. Rama's reign was a symbol of divinity, where every person received respect and security. This proved the purpose of Vishnu's avatar, that it is his duty to protect Dharma and destroy Adharma. Rama showed that the path of Dharma is the path of victory.
Towards the Next Chapter
The story of the Rama avatar is a symbol of the victory of Dharma. After the establishment of Ram Rajya, the pace of epochal change intensifies. Now, Narayana will be born in a new form, as Krishna, who will establish a new dimension of love and Dharma. His leelas will show us the path of devotion and knowledge, which will be a guide for the coming ages. In the next chapter, we will experience the wonderful story of the Krishna avatar.
