Savitri Satyavan Katha Chapter 1 — Savitri's birth, prophecy of the future. King Ashwapati and Queen Malavi's penance leads to Savitri's birth, but Narada Muni predicts her short life.

The Birth of Savitri, Prediction of the Future

There was peace and prosperity in the country of Madra, but King Ashwapati's heart was empty. For years, there was happiness and peace in his kingdom, the subjects were satisfied in every way, but there was a deep sorrow in the king's mind - he had no children. This sorrow had made him even more devoted to God.

King Ashwapati's Penance

King Ashwapati, who was known for his righteousness and justice, was distraught with a strong desire to have a son. He decided to go into solitude and perform rigorous penance. In the dense forest, where there was only the chirping of birds and the murmur of rivers, he began his penance. King Ashwapati worshiped Goddess Savitri for years without food, relying only on water and air. His penance was so difficult that even the gods were surprised. His body became weak, but his faith and belief were unwavering.

King Ashwapati repeated in his mind, "O Goddess Savitri, have mercy on me! Bless me with a radiant daughter who will brighten the name of my clan. I know that my penance is difficult, but my faith in you is stronger."

Goddess Savitri's Blessing and Birth

After eighteen years of relentless penance, Goddess Savitri was pleased with King Ashwapati. A divine light spread in the forest and Goddess Savitri appeared before the king in her radiant form. Her face had an expression of peace and compassion, and her voice was filled with the nectar of immortality. The Goddess blessed the king that he would have a radiant daughter, who would be famous in all three worlds for her intelligence, beauty and devotion.

Goddess Savitri said, "O King Ashwapati, I am very pleased with your penance. You will have a daughter who will defeat even death with her purity and integrity. But remember, what is written in fate is inevitable." Hearing the Goddess's blessing, tears flowed from King Ashwapati's eyes. After some time, Queen Malvi gave birth to a beautiful girl. The king named his daughter Savitri after the Goddess.

Narada Muni's Prediction

Savitri gradually began to grow up. She was not only beautiful, but also had amazing intelligence and compassion. One day, Narada Muni came to King Ashwapati's court. He saw Savitri and, predicting the future, said, "O King, your daughter is a mine of virtues, but her fate is short-lived. The young man she marries will also die within a year of the marriage." Hearing this prediction of Narada Muni, King Ashwapati was plunged into sorrow. Savitri heard Narada Muni's prediction, but there was no fear on her face.

Savitri said in a calm voice, "Father, what is written in fate will happen. I cannot turn away from my duty out of fear of death. I will marry the same young man whom my heart will accept. I will try to conquer death with the strength of my love and truth." King Ashwapati was astonished to see Savitri's determination. Now the question was how Savitri would choose her life partner, whose fate is written to be short-lived?

Summary of Chapter 1: Goddess Savitri was pleased with the penance of King Ashwapati and blessed him with a daughter, who was named Savitri. Narada Muni predicted that Savitri would be short-lived, but Savitri firmly decided to fulfill her duty. From this chapter, we learn that even the most difficult situations can be faced with faith and belief.
