The Beginning of Samudra Manthan

The distress of the gods and sages reached Lord Vishnu. Indra and other deities were restless with the hope of nectar, troubled by the atrocities of the demons. They knew that only nectar could grant them victory over the demons and re-establish the lost glory of the heavenly abode. Hearing the prayers of the gods, Lord Vishnu showed them the path of Samudra Manthan, a method by which nectar could be obtained, but it required the help of the demons.

Vishnu's Assurance and the Suggestion of Samudra Manthan

Lord Vishnu was seated on Sheshnag in the Ksheer Sagar. His divine radiance spread in all directions. The gods bowed to him with great reverence. Lord Vishnu's face was calm and solemn, and his eyes reflected compassion for the gods. The splendor of the heavenly abode had faded, the sages were lost in worry, and despair pervaded the gods. In such a situation, Lord Vishnu's assurance brought a new ray of hope to the gods.

Lord Vishnu said in a grave voice, "O gods, I am well aware of your suffering. Troubled by the atrocities of the demons, you have come to my refuge, and I will not disappoint you. Only nectar can protect you, but the path to obtain it is difficult. You must perform Samudra Manthan." Indra asked in surprise, "Samudra Manthan? But how is this possible, Lord? We cannot do this alone." Lord Vishnu smiled and said, "You will have to take the help of the demons. Make a treaty with them and make them partners in the churning. If nectar emerges, it will be for both of you."

Treaty Between Gods and Asuras

This proposal was very strange for the gods, as the demons were their enemies. However, the need for nectar was so strong that they agreed to Lord Vishnu's words. Indra met Bali, the king of the demons, and proposed Samudra Manthan to him. The demons initially viewed this proposal with suspicion, but when they learned that nectar would emerge from the churning and they would also be its partners, they agreed. A temporary treaty was established, in which both sides, despite distrusting each other, decided to work together in the greed for nectar.

King Bali of the demons said to his commanders, "This proposal from the gods can bring us an opportunity to become powerful. We will taste the nectar, and then we will rule heaven!" On the other hand, Indra said to his gods, "We must be careful. The demons cannot be trusted, but we must obtain nectar. May Lord Vishnu's grace be upon us." Vishnu's illusion is boundless! He brought the gods and asuras together in the greed for nectar.

Mandara Mountain as the Churning Rod and Vasuki Naga as the Rope

A giant churning rod and rope were needed for Samudra Manthan. The gods and demons decided to uproot the Mandara mountain and make it the churning rod. The Mandara mountain was so huge that lifting it was impossible for both the gods and the demons. Then Lord Vishnu, with his power, lifted the Mandara mountain and placed it on the seashore. It was decided to use Vasuki Naga as the rope for churning. Vasuki Naga was powerful and immense, and he agreed to help the gods and demons.

The preparations for Samudra Manthan were complete. The Mandara mountain was placed in the ocean, and Vasuki Naga was wrapped around it. On one side were the gods, and on the other were the demons, both standing against each other with the hope of nectar. The churning was about to begin, and the universe was eager to witness this amazing spectacle. Lord Vishnu, in his Kurma avatar, was ready to bear the mountain on his back.
