Chapter 5 of the Indra and Vritra story — The Making of Vajra. Sage Dadhichi gives his bones to the gods, from which Vajra is made, Indra's weapon.

The Making of Vajra

All the gods were pleased to see Lord Indra's firm resolve in the previous chapter. A path to freedom from the tyranny of the Asura Vritrasura now seemed to be opening up. However, the biggest obstacle in the way was the lack of a weapon to kill Vritrasura. A weapon that could withstand his immense power.

The Sacrifice of Sage Dadhichi

Indra, along with other gods, approached Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu told them that Vritrasura could only be defeated by a weapon made from the bones of a great sacrificing sage. And such a sage was Dadhichi, renowned in all three worlds for his penance and benevolence. His bones possessed immense power, gained through years of meditation. Indra was worried. Would Sage Dadhichi be willing to donate his bones?

Indra reached Sage Dadhichi's hermitage and informed him of the gods' predicament. He pleaded with the sage, "O great sage, we know this is a difficult request, but to save the heavens and humanity from Vritrasura's terror, we need the donation of your bones. Please help us." Sage Dadhichi smiled and said, "O Indra, if the welfare of the world is achieved by the donation of my bones, then it will be my greatest fortune. I am ready to give up my life immediately." There was no hesitation on his face, but a divine radiance shone through.

The Making of Vajra

Sage Dadhichi gave up his life through his yogic powers. His bones shone with a divine brilliance. Indra collected these bones and took them to Vishwakarma, the divine architect. As per the instructions of Indra, the king of the gods, Vishwakarma fashioned a wondrous weapon from Sage Dadhichi's bones, as powerful as a vajra. That weapon was named - Vajra. Vajra contained the power of Sage Dadhichi's penance and the collective will of the gods.

Vajra was a magnificent weapon. It appeared small, but it held immense power. Its radiance was like the sun, and its roar was more fearsome than the thunder of clouds. When Indra held Vajra in his hands, he felt a surge of new energy. He became confident that he could now face Vritrasura and defeat him. Lord Vishnu blessed Indra and said, "O Indra, this Vajra will protect righteousness and destroy unrighteousness. You will surely achieve victory over Vritrasura."

Indra Receives Vajra

After receiving Vajra, Indra's confidence grew even further. He was now fully prepared to face Vritrasura. He ordered all the gods to prepare for battle. The divine army sounded the conch and marched for war. Indra, mounted on his elephant Airavata, led the divine army. In his hand was Vajra, shining like a ray of light. Now the world awaited the epic battle between Indra and Vritrasura, on which the future of all worlds depended. In the next chapter, we will see how Indra uses Vajra to slay Vritrasura and liberate the gods from his tyranny.

Summary of Chapter 5: In this chapter, we saw how Indra obtains the divine weapon Vajra to slay Vritrasura. The sacrifice of Sage Dadhichi and the creation of Vajra by Vishwakarma show that even the greatest obstacles can be overcome with selfless service and dedication. The spirit of sacrifice is what leads the gods to victory.
