Dattatreya Katha – Chapter 6: Guidance to Parashurama

Guidance of Parashurama
Hearing the story of Kartavirya Arjuna's boon, Dattatreya's mind was filled with the uncertainties of the world. He continued his journey, his disciples accompanying him, with a desire for a peaceful future in their hearts. He knew that there was still more knowledge to be gained, and in this pursuit, he kept moving forward.
Meeting with Bhargava Rama
As they walked, Dattatreya reached a dense forest. There, a radiant sage sat in meditation outside his hermitage. His matted locks shone like the rays of the sun, and his face had a divine glow. Dattatreya immediately recognized him as Lord Parashurama, one of the avatars of Lord Vishnu, whose tales of wrath and power were spread across the three worlds. An atmosphere of immense peace surrounded him, yet a fire gleamed in his eyes. Dattatreya bowed at his feet with reverence.
"O Bhargava Rama, I seek your blessings," Dattatreya said humbly. Parashurama opened his eyes and looked at Dattatreya. "Dattatreya, your journey is in search of knowledge. Your heart is pure, but you must still conquer anger." Dattatreya asked with concern, "Lord, anger is human nature. How can one be completely free from it?"
Control Over Anger
Parashurama told Dattatreya about the ill effects of anger. He said that anger makes a person irrational, leading them to make wrong decisions and bring unrest into their lives. He narrated a story to them – once, in a fit of anger, he had annihilated Kshatriyas twenty-one times, for which he was still atoning. He said, anger is like fire, which burns everything to ashes. Dattatreya listened to his words attentively, a deep understanding dawning in his mind. Parashurama advised him to adopt the path of meditation, patience, and forgiveness to control anger. Dattatreya promised him that he would follow these teachings.
Parashurama blessed Dattatreya and said, "The light of knowledge is within you, let it shine brighter. By conquering anger, you will attain peace and liberation." Dattatreya felt a new energy flowing through his mind with Parashurama's grace. He understood that true strength lies in staying away from ego and anger. This experience made him more humble and calm.
Preaching of Knowledge and Peace
Parashurama also preached Dattatreya on the importance of knowledge and peace. He said that knowledge is the light that dispels the darkness of ignorance. He inspired him to study the Vedas, Upanishads, and other scriptures. He told him that true peace is not found in external circumstances, but in inner peace. He asked him to practice meditation and yoga, so that he could calm his mind and experience the Supreme Being within. Parashurama's teachings gave a new direction to Dattatreya's life. He made the pursuit of knowledge his goal, and peace the foundation of his life. Now he was moving towards his heritage and self-knowledge, which he was to receive in the next phase.
Summary of Chapter 6: In this chapter, Dattatreya meets Lord Parashurama, who tells him about controlling anger and the importance of knowledge and peace. Parashurama's guidance inspires Dattatreya towards self-discipline and spiritual growth, helping him in his quest for his heritage and self-knowledge.
