Savitri Chooses Satyavan

Born from the penance of Maharaj Ashwapati and the blessings of Goddess Savitri, Savitri had now become a young woman. Her beauty and intelligence were renowned in all three worlds. In the previous chapter, we saw how Narad Muni had predicted Savitri's future, a prediction that had worried her parents. Now, the time for Savitri's marriage had come, and Maharaj Ashwapati was searching for a suitable groom for his beloved daughter.

The Princess's First Sight

Savitri's beauty was unique. Her eyes were like lotuses, and her voice held the essence of nectar. She was an amazing confluence of beauty and virtues. While wandering in the forest with her friends, Savitri saw a radiant young man. He was cutting wood, his body was drenched in sweat, but his face radiated peace and brilliance. Savitri saw something special in that young man, a purity she had never seen before. Her heart was drawn to that young man, like a river flowing towards the ocean.

Savitri asked her friend, "Who is this young man? Why is his radiance so amazing?" The friend replied, "Princess, this is Satyavan, the son of King Dyumatsen. He has been deprived of his kingdom and is living the life of an ascetic here in the forest." Savitri's respect for Satyavan increased even more. She thought, "This is the person I want to spend my life with, no matter what."

Narad Muni's Re-Warning

When Savitri told her parents about Satyavan, Maharaj Ashwapati was pleased. He had heard a lot of praise about Satyavan's qualities. However, when Narad Muni appeared again and told about Satyavan's future, both the Maharaj and Maharani were plunged into sorrow. Narad Muni said, "O King, Satyavan is an excellent young man, but his life is very short. He will die within a year of marriage. I advise you to stop Savitri from marrying him."

Savitri was not disturbed by Narad Muni's words. She said in a firm voice, "O Sage, I know that Satyavan's life is short, but my heart has chosen him. I have made my decision, and I am not going to change it now. Whatever happens, I will spend my life with Satyavan only." Narad Muni was astonished to hear Savitri's firm resolve. He recognized the depth of Savitri's courage and love. He blessed, "Goddess, may your resolve remain firm. May God protect you."

Firm Determination and Upcoming Life

Maharaj Ashwapati and Maharani Malavi had to bow down to Savitri's firm resolve. They started preparing for the marriage of Savitri and Satyavan. Savitri knew that her life was going to go through a difficult test. However, she had unwavering faith in her love for Satyavan and her resolve. She decided to live a simple life with Satyavan in the forest, and there was not even a little fear in her mind.

Savitri knew her fate, yet she chose Satyavan, this was the pinnacle of her love. She resolved to change the event that was going to happen within a year. In this firm resolve of hers, there was also a test of Yamraj, and also, the beginning of an amazing and inspiring story. Now, she was ready to live life with Satyavan in the forest, a life full of love, sacrifice and dedication.
