Samudra Manthan Story Chapter 5 — The Emergence of Poison Halahal. During the churning of the ocean, the deadly poison Halahal emerges, endangering the entire universe.

The Rise of the Poison Halahala

In the previous chapter, we saw how the gods and demons gathered to churn the ocean, using Mount Mandara as the churning rod and the serpent Vasuki as the rope. Both sides were enthusiastic, eager to obtain the nectar, but no one knew what was hidden in the depths of the ocean. With the resolve to churn, a calamity was about to occur, which was impossible for even the gods to face.

The Manifestation of Kalkuta

The work of churning the ocean began. Mount Mandara began to rotate, the terrible roar of Vasuki serpent echoed, and the ocean stirred. As the churning intensified, many wonderful things began to emerge from the depths of the ocean. But then, a scene appeared that stunned everyone. A black smoke, the Kalkuta poison, began to rise from the ocean. Its terrible smell filled the directions, and it became difficult to breathe. The faces of both the gods and demons turned pale with fear.

King of the Gods, Indra, cried out, "What is this! This is the Halahala poison! Its flames will burn us!" The demons were also terrified, covering their mouths with their hands. "This churning will cause destruction. Far from nectar, we will all become prey to death!" one demon shouted. The immense power of this poison rendered both the gods and demons helpless.

Vishnu's Assurance

The flames of Halahala were causing havoc. The gods, terrified, ran to the refuge of Lord Vishnu. They bowed to Vishnu and prayed to him, "O Lord, this Halahala poison will destroy the entire universe. Please protect us!" Lord Vishnu looked at the gods with a calm expression. He said, "O gods, do not be afraid. This calamity is indeed terrible, but there is also a solution. Only Mahadev can drink this poison and save the universe. You all together praise Lord Shiva."

Obeying Vishnu's command, all the gods and demons began to praise Lord Shiva. Together they prayed, "O Primeval God Mahadev, you are the protector of this universe. Save us from this poison, O Neelkanth!" Vishnu was always ready to protect his devotees. By his grace, hope was instilled in the hearts of the gods.

Shiva's Consumption of Poison

Hearing the prayers of the gods, Lord Shiva appeared from Mount Kailash. He saw that the Halahala poison was engulfing the entire universe. Moved with compassion, Lord Shiva said, "This poison will destroy the entire creation. I will drink it and protect the universe." Saying this, Lord Shiva took the Halahala poison in his cupped hands and drank it. The poison settled in his throat, causing his throat to turn blue. Since then, he has been called Neelkanth.

When Mother Parvati saw that Shiva had consumed the poison, she became distraught. She pressed Shiva's throat with her hands, so that the poison could not spread in his body. Because of this, the poison remained in Shiva's throat and he saved the entire world. The gods and demons hailed Lord Shiva. Everyone was grateful for his sacrifice. Shiva had saved the world from destruction without caring for his own life. Now, the crisis of Halahala had passed, and the churning of the ocean could begin again. However, this sacrifice of Shiva had created a new challenge, which was yet to be faced.

Summary of Chapter 5: In this chapter, the Halahala poison arose, which terrified the gods and demons. Lord Shiva protected the universe by drinking the poison. The spiritual message of this chapter is that the world can be saved only through sacrifice.
