Chapter 4 of the Samudra Manthan story — Preparation for the churning. Mount Mandara is made the churning rod and Vasuki Naga the rope for the churning of the ocean.

Preparation for the Churning

In the previous chapter, the gods and demons formed an alliance for the churning of the ocean to obtain nectar. Indra and Bali together vowed to make this great task successful. Now, it was time to begin preparations for the churning, which required gathering resources from across the universe. This was a plan that perhaps neither the gods nor the demons were aware of what was to come.

Establishment of Mount Mandara

For the churning of the ocean, first a churning rod was needed, for which Mount Mandara was chosen. Mount Mandara was famous for its vastness and weight. Uprooting it was a difficult task for both the gods and the demons. The mountain was so heavy that even together, they found it impossible to move. The gods and demons put in all their strength, but the mountain did not budge. Disappointment filled their eyes, and they became tired and breathless.

King of the Gods, Indra, said to the gods, "We must try together. This is not just a test of strength, but also of unity. If we give up, the hope of nectar will be lost forever." King of the Demons, Bali, agreed, saying, "Indra is right. We must forget all our animosity and work together. This is the only way to our success."

Use of Vasuki Naga

After establishing Mount Mandara in the ocean, a rope was needed to rotate it. For this, Vasuki Naga was chosen. Vasuki was the king of the Nagas, whose vastness was famous throughout the universe. The gods and demons prayed to Vasuki to help in the churning. Vasuki accepted the prayers of the gods and demons, but demanded a fair share in return for this task. Vasuki Naga was wrapped around Mount Mandara. The gods stood on one side and the demons on the other, holding Vasuki Naga to begin the churning.

Lord Vishnu, with his Maya, was watching everything. He gave strength to the gods and demons so that they could complete this difficult task. He also infused strength into Vasuki Naga, so that he could withstand the pressure of the churning for so long. Lord Vishnu knew that this churning was not only a path to obtaining nectar, but also a war between Dharma and Adharma.

Beginning of the Churning

Finally, the churning of the ocean began. The gods and demons, holding Vasuki Naga, began to pull alternately. Mount Mandara began to rotate, and the ocean stirred. Amazing sounds began to come from the depths of the ocean, and terrible waves rose in the water. This churning was so intense that the entire earth began to tremble. The result of this churning was now near, but in the early stages of the churning, a terrible disaster was about to occur, which no one had imagined. In the next chapter, we will see how the poison Halahala arose, and how it affected the universe.

Summary of Chapter 4: This chapter describes the preparation for the churning of the ocean, in which Mount Mandara was established as the churning rod, and Vasuki Naga was used as the rope. The churning began, but the next disaster, the rise of the poison Halahala, was indicated. This chapter teaches us that before undertaking any great task, it is necessary to have proper preparation and resources, and also that difficulties are sure to arise in every task.
