Samudra Manthan Story – Chapter 3: Alliance with the Asuras

Alliance with the Demons
In the previous chapter, the gods were excited after receiving assurance of help from Lord Vishnu. The only way to defeat the immense power of the demons was for both sides to churn the ocean together and obtain nectar. Now the biggest challenge for the gods was to convince the demons to join in this difficult task. The gods knew that this task would not be easy, but they had complete faith in the grace of Lord Vishnu.
Vishnu's Advice
Indra, the king of the gods, sat with a worried expression. His mind was filled with apprehensions. The aura of heaven seemed dim because the fear of the demons pervaded every heart. Seeing the worried gods, Brihaspati Dev said, "Devraj, the path shown by Lord Vishnu will surely be successful. We must have complete faith in his plan." Brihaspati Dev's words were a ray of hope for the gods.
Indra replied, "Gurudev, I know that Lord Vishnu's plan cannot fail, but convincing the demons is extremely difficult. They are inherently cruel and greedy. How can we convince them that the nectar that comes out of this churning will be for everyone?" He was apprehensive that the demons might seize the nectar alone.
Agreement with the Demons
The gods reached the court of the demon king Bali. Seeing the gods, the demon soldiers became angry, but Bali signaled them to remain calm. Indra humbly bowed to Bali and said, "O Asurraj, we have come to you with an important proposal. Inspired by Lord Vishnu, we all want to churn the ocean together, so that nectar can be obtained and this nectar will be distributed equally among both sides." Bali listened carefully to Indra's proposal, there was a strange gleam in his eyes, it was the gleam of greed.
Bali thought for a moment and then said, "Devraj, your proposal is attractive, but we demons are not used to working hard without getting anything. If we help in this churning, what will we get? What proof do we have that the nectar will be distributed equally among both sides?" The greed for immortality had awakened in Bali's mind. By Vishnu's grace, the gods remained patient.
Indra said, "Asurraj, we promise you that the nectar will be distributed equally. There will be no deceit from our side. Lord Vishnu himself will monitor this churning." Indra also said that not only nectar, but also other precious gems will be obtained from this churning, which will be distributed equally among both sides. The gods tempted the demons, telling them about gold, jewels and the pleasures of heaven so that they would be ready for the churning. By Vishnu's illusion, the demons got caught in this greed.
Greed for Immortality
The demon Bali and his companions were blinded by the greed for immortality. They thought that by churning with the gods, they too would attain immortality and become powerful forever. They did not trust the gods, but the desire for nectar had blinded them. They agreed to join the churning. Thus, a temporary alliance was formed between the gods and the demons for the churning of the ocean.
Vishnu knew that the demons were deceitful by nature, but he also knew that he would need the power of the demons to obtain nectar. He instructed the gods to be patient and be prepared to face every situation. The play of Lord Vishnu is infinite, he knew what was going to happen next, and everything was happening according to his plan. The gods also prayed at the feet of Lord Vishnu, asking him for strength and wisdom so that they could successfully complete this difficult task.
Preparation for Churning
An alliance had been formed between the gods and the demons, but now the task of preparing for the churning remained. Uprooting the Mandarachal mountain and taking it to the Ksheersagar, using Vasuki Nag as a rope, all these tasks were extremely difficult. Both the gods and the demons had to put in all their strength. In the next chapter, we will see how both sides prepare for the churning together and what difficulties come in their way.
Summary of Chapter 3: In this chapter, the gods, on the advice of Lord Vishnu, decide to churn the ocean together with the demons. The demons, tempted by immortality, also agree to join in this task. This chapter teaches us that sometimes we have to work together with people of opposite nature to achieve our goal, but we should always maintain discretion and patience.
