Purushottam Mas Katha: Adhyaya 3 | पुरुषोत्तम मास कथा: अध्याय 3

Adhimas, being condemned and helpless, went to the refuge of Lord Vishnu. He narrated his plight, and the Lord consoled him and assured him of honoring him.

The sages said, 'O great one! Please tell us in detail the auspicious words that Narayana, the friend of Nara, spoke to Narada.' Suta said, 'O best of the twice-born! I will tell you the beautiful words that Narayana spoke to Narada, just as I have heard them. Please listen.'

Narayana said, 'O Narada! First, I will tell you what the great Mahatma Shri Krishna Chandra said to King Yudhishthira. Listen.

Once, the religious king Ajatashatru Yudhishthira was defeated in a game of dice by the wicked sons of the deceitful Dhritarashtra. In front of everyone, the wicked Duhshasana grabbed Draupadi, who was born from fire and devoted to dharma, by her hair and dragged her, and after dragging her, he began to disrobe her. Then Lord Krishna protected her. Afterwards, the Pandavas renounced their kingdom and went to the Kamyaka forest. There, they lived by eating the fruits of the forest, suffering great hardship. Just as wild elephants have hair on their bodies, so did the Pandavas have hair on their bodies.

To see the suffering Pandavas, Lord Devakisuta went to the Kamyaka forest with the sages. Seeing that Lord, Yudhishthira, Bhimasena, Arjuna, etc., were overwhelmed with love and suddenly stood up as if life had returned to a dead body, and they embraced Krishna with affection, and they bowed with devotion at the lotus feet of Lord Krishna. Draupadi also slowly came there and quickly bowed to the Lord without laziness.

Seeing those suffering Pandavas wearing deer skin clothes and their whole bodies covered in dust, their bodies rough, their hair scattered all around. Draupadi was also seen in the same way, with a weak body and surrounded by sorrows. Seeing the Pandavas in this state of distress, he became extremely sad.

The devotee-loving Lord, wishing to burn the sons of Dhritarashtra, became angry with them. The soul of the universe, looking with raised arms, with a face like the terrible mouth of crores of Kalas, like a blazing fire of destruction, pressing his lips tightly under his teeth, ready to burn the three worlds, he became as enraged as Lord Ramachandra, tormented by the separation from Shri Sita, was with Ravana.

Seeing the Lord angry in that way, Arjuna, trembling, to please Krishna, with the approval of Draupadi, Dharmaraja, and others, quickly joined his hands and began to praise him.

Arjuna said, 'O Krishna! O Lord of the universe! O Lord! I am not outside the universe. You are the protector of the universe. O Lord! Will you not protect me? Who knows what cannot happen when those whose eyes can cause the fall of Brahma become angry? What will happen?

O destroyer! Subdue your anger. O father of fathers! O Lord of the universe! The world is destroyed by the anger of such great men. You are the direct Shri Krishna, knowing the complete essence, the cause of all causes, the seed of the Vedas and Vedangas. I bow to you. You are God. You have created this animate and inanimate world. You are the auspicious of all auspiciousness and the seed form of the eternal. Therefore, how can you destroy your entire creation for the offense of one? Who would be so foolish as to burn down his house to kill mosquitoes?'

Shri Narayana said, 'Arjuna, who subdues the valor of others, submitted to the Lord in this way and bowed down.'

Suta said, 'Shri Krishna calmed his anger and himself became as calm as the moon. Seeing the Lord calm in this way, the Pandavas were relieved. With joyful faces and overwhelmed with love, everyone bowed to the Lord and worshiped him with wild roots, tubers, fruits, etc.'

Narayana said, 'Then, knowing that Shri Krishna, who is worthy of refuge and kind to his devotees, was pleased, Arjuna, filled with special love, repeatedly bowed and asked the same question that you have asked us from Shri Krishna.'

Hearing Arjuna's question in this way, Shri Krishna, thinking for a moment in his mind, comforting his friends the Pandavas and Draupadi, who was holding the vow, Shri Krishna, the best of speakers, spoke words beneficial to the Pandavas.

Shri Krishna said, 'O King! O great one! O Vibhatsu! Now listen to my words. You have asked an unprecedented question. I am not enthusiastic about answering you. The answer to this question is more secret than secret, not even known to the sages. Yet, O Arjuna! Because you are a friend or because you are our devotee, we say it.

O Suvrata! That answer is very fierce, so listen in order! The twelve months, beginning with Chaitra, the moments, the two fortnights of the month, the hours, the praharas, the triharas, the six seasons, the auspicious moments, the Dakshinayana and Uttarayana, the year, the four yugas, similarly, the time up to the parardha, all this and the rivers, seas, ponds, wells, stepwells, ditches, springs, vines, herbs, trees, bamboo, etc., forest medicines, cities, villages, mountains, puras, all these have forms and are worshiped with their qualities. There is no such unique person among them who lives without his presiding deity. All these, being worshiped in their respective domains, are givers of fruits. By the greatness of the union of their respective presiding deities, all these are fortunate.

O Pandunandana! Once, Adhimas was born. Everyone said to that helpless, condemned month that this is a malamas, devoid of the sun's transit, therefore not worthy of worship. This month is not worthy of being touched because it is in the form of filth and is unacceptable in auspicious deeds. Hearing such words from the mouths of people, this month became unemployed, without authority, surrounded by sorrow, with a very sad mind, afflicted and engrossed in worry, and became like one on the verge of death. Then, holding patience, he came to my refuge.

O Nara! He reached Vaikuntha Bhavan, where I lived, and came to my house and saw me, the Supreme Purushottama. At that time, seeing me seated on a golden throne adorned with priceless jewels, he prostrated himself on the ground and, joining his hands, with tears constantly flowing from his eyes, holding patience, spoke in a choked voice.'

Suta said, 'In this way, the great sage Badrinath, having narrated the story, became silent. Then, hearing the story from Narayana's mouth, Narada Muni, who is compassionate to his devotees, spoke again.'

Narada said, 'In this way, going to the pure abode of Lord Vishnu, who is present with his full art, who can be attained through devotion, who removes the sins of the world, who is not easily found even by yogis, who gives fearlessness to the world, who is of the form of Brahman, what did Adhimas, who had taken refuge at the lotus feet of Mukunda, say?'

Thus ends the third chapter in the Purushottam Mas Mahatmya in the Shri Brihannaradiya Purana ॥3॥
