Narasimha Avatar Katha – Chapter 2: Prahlad's Devotion
Prahlada's Devotion
In the previous chapter, we learned about the rise of the powerful Hiranyakashipu and his quest for immortality. His penance and the boon he received from Brahma made him invincible. But see the irony of fate, a new story was being initiated by the devotion of the same Hiranyakashipu's son, Prahlada.
The Seed of Devotion in the Womb
Queen Kayadhu, Hiranyakashipu's wife, had taken refuge in the hermitage of Devrishi Narada after being abducted by Devraj Indra. Kayadhu's mind was calmed by the teachings of Narada Muni and the chanting of Lord Vishnu's name. The child Prahlada, growing in her womb, was connected to the devotion of Lord Vishnu through his mother. He was not even born yet, and the sprout of Vishnu's love had already sprung up in his heart. Narada Muni had predicted that this boy would be a great devotee of Vishnu and would protect Dharma.
Kayadhu thought to herself, "What a wonderful child I have! Immersed in the love of Lord Vishnu even before birth. How will Hiranyakashipu feel knowing this? How has love for Vishnu, for whose destruction my husband has performed so much penance, sprouted in my son?"
Prahlada's Childhood and Vishnu Devotion
As Prahlada grew older, his devotion to Vishnu became even stronger. Instead of playing with other children, he would lose himself in meditation on Lord Vishnu. Even in school, his mind was not engaged in studying, he would continue to preach Vishnu devotion to Shanda and Amarka, the sons of his guru Shukracharya. The children thought he was crazy, but Prahlada did not care about it. He only liked to chant Vishnu's name, remember Vishnu's pastimes, and dedicate his life to Vishnu's feet. His eyes were always moist, as if tears were flowing from an ocean of love.
Every moment, in every breath, Prahlada was focused on Vishnu. Every pore of his body chanted the mantra "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya". He felt as if Vishnu himself was seated in his heart and guiding him. There was a wonderful power in his devotion, which had started to influence other children in the school as well.
Hiranyakashipu's Anger
When Hiranyakashipu came to know that his son Prahlada was absorbed in the devotion of Vishnu, he was filled with anger. He called Prahlada and threatened him, "Foolish boy! Whose name are you chanting? Don't you know that Vishnu is my enemy? Being my son, you worship my enemy? I order you to stop taking Vishnu's name from now on, otherwise there will be no one worse than me."
Prahlada replied fearfully, but firmly, "Father, Vishnu is the lord of all, he is the protector of the universe. There is no feeling of enmity in him. How can I abandon him? He resides in my heart." Hiranyakashipu's anger increased even more. He said, "Show me where your Vishnu is! Is he in this pillar?" He pointed to a pillar. Prahlada said calmly, "Yes father, he is everywhere." From here begins a new story of Hiranyakashipu's anger and Prahlada's test, which will be revealed in the coming chapter.
Summary of Chapter 2: In this chapter, we learned about Prahlada's devotion to Vishnu from his childhood. He received the knowledge of Vishnu's name from his mother's womb and was always absorbed in the devotion of God. Despite Hiranyakashipu's anger and threats, Prahlada did not abandon Vishnu, which shows that true devotion is greater than any fear.
