Satyanarayan Katha – Chapter 1: The Story of the Poor Brahmin

The Story of the Impoverished Brahmin
In the previous chapter, we heard the praises of Lord Vishnu's glory. Now, this story takes us into the life of a simple Brahmin, where, by the grace of Lord Satyanarayan, troubles are removed and peace and happiness come. This story illustrates the importance of worshiping Lord Vishnu in Kali Yuga.
The Arrival of Narad Muni
Once upon a time, Narad Muni, while wandering through the three worlds, reached the mortal world. He saw that people on Earth were suffering from sorrow and pain. People were distressed by sin and injustice, having strayed from the path of Dharma. Narad Muni's heart became troubled upon seeing this sight. He thought that he should find a way to benefit these humans. Compassion arose in his mind, and he immediately set off towards Ksheersagar, the abode of Lord Vishnu.
Narad Muni reached Ksheersagar and bowed at the feet of Lord Vishnu. "O Narayan, O Lord of Lakshmi! There is chaos on Earth. People are afflicted with sorrow. Tell me a way to benefit these beings," Narad Muni said, his throat choked with emotion. "My heart is deeply saddened to see the suffering of the world."
Lord Vishnu's Boon
Lord Vishnu smiled gently and said to Narad Muni, "O Narad, I am pleased with the question you have asked. I will tell you about an excellent fast, by performing which all the troubles of humans will be removed, and they will attain peace and happiness. This fast is the Satyanarayan Vrat. Whoever performs this fast with faith and devotion, their wishes will surely be fulfilled." Lord Vishnu explained the method and benefits of the fast to Narad Muni in detail. He explained that in this fast, it is mandatory to listen to the story of Lord Satyanarayan, worship Him, and distribute Prasad.
As soon as Narad Muni heard the words of Lord Vishnu, his heart was filled with joy. He felt as if a solution to all the sorrows of the world had been found. Lord Vishnu further said, "This fast bestows wealth upon the poor, children upon the childless, and health upon the sick. By the effect of this fast, a person becomes free from all the bonds of life." By the grace of Lord Vishnu, Narad Muni found the path to the salvation of mankind.
Knowledge to the Impoverished Brahmin
Narad Muni returned to Earth and began to tell people about the Satyanarayan Vrat. One day, while wandering, he reached the village of a poor Brahmin. The Brahmin was very poor and made his living by begging. Narad Muni felt pity upon seeing that Brahmin. Narad Muni told the Brahmin about the Satyanarayan Vrat and said, "O Brahmin, you perform this fast; by the grace of Lord Satyanarayan, your poverty will be removed." The Brahmin listened to Narad Muni's words with faith and decided to perform the fast. The next day, he resolved to perform the Satyanarayan Vrat and set out to gather the materials for performing the fast. In the next chapter, we will see how the life of that woodcutter changes due to the effect of the Satyanarayan Vrat.
Summary of Chapter 1: In this chapter, Narad Muni saw the suffering of humans on Earth and asked Lord Vishnu for a solution to alleviate it. Lord Vishnu explained the importance of the Satyanarayan Vrat, and Narad Muni told a poor Brahmin about this fast, giving him a ray of hope. The spiritual lesson is that all troubles can be removed through devotion to God.
