Vibhishana's Surrender Story – Chapter 2: Vibhishana's Advice Rejected

Vibhishana's Advice Rejected
In the previous chapter, we saw the atmosphere of unrest in Lanka and how Vibhishana was developing doubts about his brother Ravana's actions. Now, in this chapter, Vibhishana will try to resolve his doubts and bring Ravana back to the right path, but fate had something else in store. The gods wished for Ravana's end, and for this, Vibhishana's departure from Lanka was inevitable.
Advice to Return Sita
In the grand court of golden Lanka, Ravana was seated on his jewel-studded throne, like the sun shining amidst the clouds. The courtiers were subdued by fear and awe, the tales of Ravana's cruelty echoing in their ears. Vibhishana, steadfast in his devotion to dharma and justice, stepped forward. His heart was filled with pain seeing his brother's destructive path. Deep lines of worry had appeared on his face, but the light of truth still flickered in his eyes.
Vibhishana joined his hands and said, "O Lankesh, I have come to show you the path of truth and dharma. Return Mother Sita to Shri Ram; this is the path to the welfare of Lanka and the people of Lanka. Shri Ram is an avatar of Narayana; enmity with him will lead to destruction. Abandon your ego and save Lanka from destruction." His words were filled with peace and humility, but his purpose was firm.
Ravana's Insult
Hearing Vibhishana's words, Ravana became enraged. His eyes turned red, and his body trembled with anger. He looked at Vibhishana with disdain and said, "You, my brother, are speaking the language of my enemy? Do you not know my power? I have defeated even the gods, so how can a mere human like Shri Ram be my equal? You are a fool to speak such things." The entire court trembled at Ravana's roar. He called Vibhishana a coward and a weakling and ordered him to leave the court. Ravana further said, "Go, go to the very Ram you praise so much. I no longer consider you my brother."
Vibhishana's heart was torn by Ravana's harsh words, but he did not lose his composure. It became clear to him that Ravana was blinded by his ego and was not ready to see the truth. He also realized that there was only one way to save Lanka now – to renounce Ravana and take refuge in Lord Rama. It was by the grace of Shri Ram that Vibhishana realized the truth and decided to walk the path of dharma.
Decision to Leave Lanka
With a heavy heart, Vibhishana decided to leave Lanka. He gathered some of his trusted companions and told them that it was no longer possible to stay with Ravana, as he was on the path of destruction. He said, "I believe that Shri Ram is the protector of dharma, and we should seek refuge in him. This is the only way to save Lanka."
Vibhishana's decision was not easy. He had to leave his birthplace, his family, and his kingdom. But he chose the path of dharma, and he knew that Lord Rama would protect him. Now, Vibhishana would face a new exciting journey away from Lanka in search of Lord Rama. Whatever happens in Lanka now, he would not be responsible for it. His goal now is to go to the refuge of Shri Ram and seek his help. He is confident that Ram will surely accept him.
Summary of Chapter 2: In this chapter, we saw that Vibhishana advised Ravana to return Sita, but Ravana, in anger, insulted Vibhishana. This made Vibhishana realize that Ravana could not be saved, and he decided to seek refuge in Lord Rama. This teaches us that the path of truth and dharma is always difficult, but we should never deviate from it.
