Chapter 3 of the Narad Muni story — Test and Growth: The Fall of Ego. Lord Vishnu tests Narad's ego and makes him realize his limitations.

The Test and Growth: The Fall of Ego

In the previous chapter, we saw Narada Muni as Vishnu's messenger, transmitting divine messages between gods and humans. The melodies of his veena brought peace and harmony to the universe. However, with this accomplishment, a subtle feeling began to take root in Narada's mind – ego. He started considering his penance and devotion to Vishnu superior to all others, and this very feeling was about to become the cause of his upcoming test.

Pride in Penance

Narada Muni sat in deep meditation on the high peaks of the Himalayas. The cool breeze played with his matted hair, and the golden rays of the sun illuminated his radiant face. He had been performing severe penance for years, and he felt that he had conquered his senses. A thought arose in his mind, "Is there anyone else in the three worlds who is a tapasvi like me? There is no other heart that holds a love as pure as my devotion to Vishnu." This thought was a spark of ego, which began to smolder in his heart.

He picked up his veena and began chanting "Narayana Narayana," but today, that chant lacked the humility and love it once had; instead, a feeling of pride was hidden within it. Narada thought, "I can achieve any accomplishment through the power of my penance. Vishnu is also pleased with me, and He must surely consider my penance to be the best."

The Net of Vishnu's Maya

Lord Vishnu was not unaware of Narada Muni's ego. He knew that Narada was His beloved devotee, but ego can lead a devotee towards destruction. Therefore, He decided to remove Narada's ego. One day, as Narada Muni was wandering, playing his veena, he saw a vast, enchanting city. That city had beautiful gardens, palaces adorned with gold, and an atmosphere of prosperity all around. Narada Muni thought, "What a wonderful city this is! I have never seen such a delightful sight before."

As soon as he entered the city, he met its king, Shilanidhi. The king welcomed him with great respect and urged him to rest in the royal palace for a few days. Narada Muni stayed as the king's guest and gradually his interest in the royal affairs began to grow. He saw the king's beautiful daughter, Sunayana, and was captivated by her. Vishnu had, with His maya, confused Narada's mind. Narada did not realize that he was undergoing a test. In a moment, he had forgotten his penance, his objectives, and Lord Vishnu. He expressed his desire to King Shilanidhi to marry Sunayana. The influence of Vishnu's maya had completely taken Narada Muni under its control.

The Curse and Liberation from Ego

A Swayamvara (a ceremony where a bride chooses her husband) was organized. Narada, eager to ask Vishnu for a beautiful form, went to Him. Vishnu gave Narada the face of a monkey. Narada became enraged when Princess Sunayana did not choose him. He realized his true appearance only when he saw his reflection in the water. In anger, Narada Muni cursed Lord Vishnu that He too would have to take birth on Earth in human form and suffer separation from His wife. After giving the curse, Narada realized his mistake. His ego was shattered. He asked for forgiveness from Lord Vishnu, and then he understood that the path of devotion is not traversed by ego, but by humility and love. Vishnu forgave him and said that Narada's curse would become the cause of the Rama avatar, so that righteousness could be established.

This test of Narada Muni was a significant turning point in his life. This experience taught him that true knowledge and devotion lie in humility. He renounced his ego and once again became an exclusive devotee of Vishnu. After this incident, Narada Muni, through his divine plays, explained the importance of Vishnu devotion to people. He had now truly become Vishnu's messenger.

Summary of Chapter 3: This chapter describes the fall of Narada Muni's ego and the lesson he learned. Due to ego, he became confused, gave a curse, and finally realized his mistake. From this chapter, we get the message that the path of devotion and knowledge is traversed with humility.
