Sati Katha – Chapter 1: Sati's Birth and Shiva

Birth of Sati and Shiva

Prajapati Daksha, one of Brahma's mind-born sons, had a strong desire for the growth of his progeny and the maintenance of divinity. This desire intensified when he realized that creation needed a power that could maintain balance. With this objective, he performed intense penance to Bhagavati Adishakti, so that she would be born as his daughter.

Incarnation of Adishakti in Daksha's Courtyard

At an auspicious moment, when the sky was glittering with stars and the atmosphere was fragrant with aromatic flowers, a divine maiden was born from the womb of Prajapati Daksha's wife, Maharani Prasuti. Her radiance was such as if the sun's rays had descended upon the earth. Her face was adorned with profound peace and divinity. Daksha and Prasuti named their daughter Sati, which means 'truth'. A wave of joy spread across the three worlds with her birth, for Sati was no ordinary maiden, but a part of Adishakti.

Sati, though an infant, possessed the seeds of knowledge and detachment. Her eyes were always searching for something unknown. "Look Prasuti, how serene and contemplative our daughter is," Daksha remarked, a mixture of pride and wonder in his eyes. Prasuti replied affectionately, "Yes, my lord, I feel this child is not destined for an ordinary life."

Love for Shiva from Childhood

As Sati grew, her mind became detached from worldly pleasures. Her heart filled with unwavering love for Lord Shiva, whose tales of renunciation and penance she had heard from her mother. She found profound peace in the Ganga flowing from Shiva's matted locks, the power of his trident, and the sound of his damaru. She often imagined the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas, where Shiva remained absorbed in meditation.

Sati's love was that of a devotee, a fervent desire for the soul to unite with the Supreme Being. She often expressed her curiosity to her mother about Shiva, "Mother, is Shiva truly so detached? Does he have no attachment to the world?" Prasuti would smile and reply, "Daughter, Shiva is a symbol of both love and detachment. Even while remaining distant from the world, he works for its welfare." This love of Sati for Shiva gradually transformed into a firm resolve, which was to lead her on the path to attain Shiva.

Daksha's Disdain for Shiva

Daksha was a powerful king who believed in grandeur and glory. He did not approve of Shiva's ascetic life and detachment from the world. Daksha considered Shiva a wild yogi dwelling in cremation grounds, unworthy of his daughter. He believed that a powerful prince or deity would be a suitable groom for Sati. He tried many times to dissuade Sati from thinking about Shiva.

"Sati, you are a princess, you should not think of such a yogi who has no fixed abode," Daksha once said angrily. Sati replied humbly, "Father, no one can stop the heart's inclination. My mind is already devoted to Shiva." Daksha's anger intensified. Expressing his disdainful feelings towards Shiva, he declared, "I will never permit you to marry Shiva! I will give you all the comforts you can imagine, but never Shiva!" This disdain of Daksha caused deep anguish in Sati's heart, but it could not diminish her love for Shiva. This disdain was a test, meant to reveal the depth and steadfastness of Sati's love.
