Chapter 1 of Vibhishana Sharanagati Katha — Unrest in Lanka, Vibhishana's Doubt. Troubled by Ravana's atrocities in Lanka, Vibhishana develops doubt and attraction towards Rama's Dharma.

Unrest in Lanka, Vibhishana's Doubt

Across the ocean, in the city of Lanka, Ravana's tyranny had reached its peak. By abducting Mother Sita, Ravana had paved the way for the destruction of his own lineage. There was chaos among the gods, and a strange unease pervaded Lanka, as if a terrible storm was about to arrive.

Ravana's Angry Court

The royal palace of golden Lanka, despite its grandeur, trembled with Ravana's rage. The demon commanders and ministers, terrified, tried to appease their king's fiery anger. Ravana, seated on his golden throne, looked around with red eyes. The flames of anger blazed on his face, as if he would incinerate the entire Lanka. A terrifying silence prevailed throughout the court, which no one dared to break. Only the sound of Ravana's heavy breaths could be heard, making the atmosphere even more dreadful.

“Sita! That servant girl! Has she not yet bowed at my feet? Does she not understand my power? Does she not fear death?” Ravana roared. His words were like thunderbolts, shaking the entire court. "Go! Warn her again! Tell her, no one can escape Ravana's wrath!”

Vibhishana's Doubt

In the same court, Ravana's younger brother, Vibhishana, was also present. He watched his brother's anger, but his heart felt sympathy for Sita. Vibhishana was righteous and virtuous. He had deep doubts about Ravana's actions. Hearing about Rama's strength and devotion, a fear had gripped his heart. He knew that Ravana's path would lead to destruction. Vibhishana knew that Sita was no ordinary woman; she possessed divine power, and Ravana had made a grave mistake by imprisoning her.

Upon hearing Rama's name, Vibhishana experienced a wonderful peace in his heart. He felt as if Rama was the truth, and Ravana's path was untruth. He knew that Rama was the protector of dharma, and Ravana was the symbol of adharma. Nevertheless, it was his duty to try and reason with his brother, whatever the outcome. Rama's grace seemed to give him the strength to remain steadfast on the path of truth.

The Beginning of Disagreement

After the court concluded, Vibhishana went to Ravana's chamber. He tried to calm Ravana and advised him to respectfully return Sita to Rama. Ravana, upon hearing his brother's words, became furious. He even called Vibhishana a coward and a traitor. A heated argument ensued between the two brothers, sowing the seeds of division in Lanka. Ravana's anger further fueled Vibhishana's doubts, and he decided to seek refuge in Rama.

Summary of Chapter 1: In this chapter, we saw how Ravana's anger caused unrest in Lanka.
