Vishnu's Messenger: The Divine Communicator

In the previous chapter, ‘Narad Muni: Birth and Devotion’, we saw how Narad was born and how his devotion was dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Now, we move towards the moment when Lord Vishnu, pleased with his devotion, granted him a wonderful power, enabling him to traverse the universe and establish communication between gods, demons, and humans. This power would establish Narad as ‘Vishnu’s Messenger’.

The Divine Boon

In Vrindavan, Narad was engrossed in severe penance. His soul was drenched in the love of Lord Vishnu. One day, at the climax of his penance, a divine light filled the entire atmosphere. Narad opened his eyes and saw that Lord Vishnu himself stood before him, his divine form radiant like millions of suns, yet an ocean of compassion flowed in his eyes. Narad was thrilled, a unique energy coursed through his entire body, and he fell at the Lord’s feet.

Vishnu smiled and said, "O Narad, I am extremely pleased with your devotion. You have fully established me in your heart. Your penance has been successful." Narad replied humbly, "O Lord, this is your grace. I am merely a humble servant." He thought to himself, "Am I worthy of this boon? How will I be able to repay this grace of the Lord?"

Traversing the Universe

Vishnu blessed Narad, saying, "From today, you will be able to go anywhere, anytime in the universe. You will establish communication between gods, demons, and humans. Your mouth will always resound with the chant of 'Narayana Narayana', and this will be your introduction. You will become my messenger, propagate dharma, and help devotees." As Vishnu said this, Narad received a divine veena, whose melody began to echo throughout the universe.

With this boon from Vishnu, Narad’s power became limitless. He was no longer just a devotee, but Vishnu’s representative, who could go anywhere as needed. His words were heard and understood by gods, demons, and humans. Lord Vishnu also explained to him that he must use this power only to establish dharma and against injustice. This divine grace was a significant turning point in Narad’s life.

Dialogue Between Heaven and Earth

Narad Muni now began to traverse the universe, chanting 'Narayana Narayana'. He would meet Indra in the heavenly realms, impart knowledge to kings on Earth, and sometimes guide devotees like Prahlad in the demonic realms. He tried to establish peace between gods and demons, and inspired humans to walk the path of dharma. The sweet melody of his veena was spreading the message of peace and love throughout the universe. Narad understood that he had received this power to bring good to society. He now also had to learn that with this power, ego could arise, and how that ego would lead to downfall. This topic will form the basis of our next chapter, ‘Trials and Growth: The Fall of Ego’.
