Dattatreya Katha – Chapter 3: The Twenty-Four Gurus

Twenty-Four Gurus
After studying the Vedas and scriptures deeply in his childhood, Dattatreya set out in search of knowledge. He did not take refuge with any particular guru, but considered nature itself as his guru. In everything in nature, he saw a treasure trove of knowledge, and in every element, a unique lesson was hidden. On this journey, he received education from twenty-four gurus, from whom he gained knowledge of the profound mysteries of life.
Tolerance from Mother Earth
Dattatreya was sitting in deep meditation in a vast field. The sun was intense, the earth was hot, but Dattatreya was unwavering. He observed the tolerance of the earth. People cut down trees, throw garbage into rivers, yet the earth provides food and water, bearing the burden of all. It was this tolerance of Mother Earth that inspired him. His mind became calm, anger and ego vanished.
Dattatreya thought to himself, "How tolerant this earth is! I too will remain calm and steady in every situation in the same way. I will accept slander and praise, happiness and sorrow with an equal attitude. This is true practice." He bowed to Mother Earth and moved on.
Selfless Nature of Air
The next stop was a high mountain. The wind was blowing at a high speed on the mountain peak. Dattatreya observed the air carefully. Air blows everywhere without any discrimination, becoming life-giving. It never asks for anything from anyone, it just keeps moving continuously, giving vital air to all. Dattatreya absorbed this selfless nature of the air within himself.
"How wonderful is this nature of the air," Dattatreya thought. "It gives life to everyone without any expectation. I too will serve everyone selflessly in the same way, without any desire for fruits." Dattatreya took a deep breath and felt light like the air.
Inspiration for Renunciation from the Sun
Then Dattatreya reached the bank of a river, where he saw the sun rising. The sun illuminates the entire earth with its rays, giving its radiance. But it takes nothing back. It burns itself, yet gives light and energy to others. Dattatreya felt this renunciation of the sun. He was inspired to renounce something within himself as well.
Looking at the sun, Dattatreya said, "O Sun God! How great is your renunciation! You illuminate the whole world by burning yourself. I too will renounce my ego and attachment, and become a light for others." The sun's energy gave new strength to his mind.
The Path Ahead
In this way, Dattatreya gained knowledge from twenty-four gurus, including the Earth, Air, and Sun. The lessons learned from these gurus helped him understand the ultimate truth of life. Now his mind was fully prepared to walk the Avadhoota path. In the next chapter, we will see how Dattatreya revealed the secrets of the Avadhoota Gita, and how his knowledge illuminated the world.
Summary of Chapter 3: Dattatreya received education from twenty-four gurus, prominent among whom were tolerance from the Earth, selfless nature from the Air, and inspiration for renunciation from the Sun. These teachings prepared him to walk the Avadhoota path and helped him understand the ultimate truth of life.
