Chapter 5 of the Vamana Avatar Katha — Ignoring Shukracharya's Warning. Shukracharya warns Mahabali that Vamana is an avatar of Vishnu, but Mahabali decides to donate.

Shukracharya's Warning Ignored

In the previous chapter, we saw how King Mahabali organized a yajna to donate to the sages, and in that yajna, Lord Vishnu arrived in the form of the Brahmachari Vamana. A divine radiance and aura filled the yajna hall. Mahabali had a strong resolve to donate, but destiny had other plans.

Shukracharya's Distress

Seeing the extraordinary form of Vamana Deva, Shukracharya became worried. He immediately recognized that this was no ordinary child, but Lord Vishnu himself, who had descended to shatter Mahabali's ego and return the kingdom to the gods. His heart filled with apprehension. He knew that Mahabali had become a threat to the gods due to his generosity, and Vishnu's arrival would surely be in Indra's favor. A strange unease spread through the yajna hall, as if something ominous was about to happen.

“O Mahabali,” said Shukracharya, “this boy who has come to ask for a donation from you is no ordinary Brahmin. He is Lord Vishnu himself! You know that you are an enemy of the gods. If Narayana takes three steps of land as a donation from you, your everything will be destroyed. Listen to me and do not make this donation.”

Mahabali's Unwavering Resolve

Even after Shukracharya's persuasion, Mahabali was not ready to back down from his word. He said, “Gurudev, I know you are speaking for my well-being, but I cannot go back on my word. I have resolved to donate, and now I will fulfill it. If Lord Vishnu himself is asking something from me, it is my supreme fortune. I will have no regrets, no matter what I lose in return for my word." Mahabali's face shone with confidence and determination. He took pride in being a generous donor and wanted to maintain this glory at any cost.

Seeing Mahabali's unwavering resolve, Lord Vishnu smiled. His respect for Mahabali grew even more. He knew how steadfast this devotee was in his promise. This was the purpose of his divine play – to guide Mahabali on the path of dharma without breaking his ego.

Shukracharya's Final Attempt

To stop Mahabali from donating, Shukracharya made a final attempt. Using his yogic powers, he took a subtle form and entered the kamandalu (water pot) from which Mahabali was to pour water during the donation. He blocked the mouth of the kamandalu so that water could not flow out, and the donation process stopped. Chaos ensued in the yajna hall. Mahabali became worried as to why the donation was not happening.

Vamana Deva understood everything. He picked up a kusha (sacred grass) and poked it into the mouth of the kamandalu. The kusha pricked Shukracharya's eye, causing him to groan in pain and emerge from the kamandalu. One of his eyes was damaged. This was Vishnu's divine play, which thwarted Shukracharya's attempt to protect dharma. Shukracharya knew that it was now impossible to stop Mahabali from donating.

Summary of Chapter 5: In this chapter, we saw that Shukracharya tried to stop Mahabali from donating to Vamana Deva, but Mahabali remained steadfast in his word. Shukracharya's entry into the kamandalu and Vamana Deva poking his eye with kusha shows that no one's strength can prevail against the will of God. The importance of donation is paramount, and keeping one's word is essential, regardless of the consequences.
