Chapter 4 of Shukracharya Katha — The Story of Devayani and Kacha. This chapter depicts the love story of Devayani and Kacha and Shukracharya's curse.

The Story of Devayani and Kach

In the previous chapter, we learned about the penance of Shukracharya, the guru of the Asuras, and the Sanjeevani Vidya he acquired. With the power of this knowledge, he could revive even the dead Asuras, which instilled fear among the Devas. The Devas sought help from Devaguru Brihaspati, who sent his son Kach to Shukracharya to learn Sanjeevani Vidya.

Kach's Arrival

Kach, the radiant son of Brihaspati, the guru of the Devas, arrived at Shukracharya's ashram. The ashram was peaceful and picturesque, surrounded by dense trees, and the chirping of birds filled the atmosphere with melody. Kach bowed to Shukracharya and introduced himself with great humility. Kach's face radiated a divine glow, and his eyes reflected a thirst for knowledge. Shukracharya looked at Kach with affection and accepted him as a disciple. He began imparting the knowledge of the Vedas, Shastras, and Yagnas to Kach.

"O Gurudev," Kach said with reverence, "I have come to gain knowledge by staying at your feet. Please accept me as your disciple and reveal the secret of Sanjeevani Vidya." Shukracharya replied, "My child, acquiring knowledge is a difficult penance. You must serve the guru with patience and devotion."

Devayani's Love

Devayani, Shukracharya's daughter, was beautiful and virtuous. Kach's scholarship, humility, and beauty captivated Devayani. Gradually, love for Kach began to blossom in Devayani's heart. She was always ready to serve Kach, brought him fruits and flowers, and took care of his needs. Kach could not remain unaffected by Devayani's love and affection. A deep bond was established between them, far exceeding the relationship of a guru and a disciple. One day, Devayani confessed her love to Kach. Blushing with shyness, she said, "Kach, you reside in my heart. My life is incomplete without you."

Kach listened to Devayani and replied respectfully, "O Devayani, I respect you and am grateful to you. However, I have come here to acquire Sanjeevani Vidya, and my purpose is to obey my guru's command. I cannot betray my guru." Shukracharya's knowledge and his grace remained upon Kach, due to which he did not deviate from his path of duty.

The Curse on Kach

When the Asuras learned that Kach had come to learn Sanjeevani Vidya, they became enraged. They tried to kill Kach several times, but Shukracharya revived him with his knowledge. Finally, the Asuras devised a terrible plan. They killed Kach, mixed his ashes with wine, and made Shukracharya drink it. When Devayani learned of this, she began to lament and pleaded with her father to revive Kach.

Shukracharya, through his yogic powers, saw that Kach was inside his stomach. He said to Devayani, "Daughter, if I revive Kach, I will have to die because he will tear open my stomach to come out. I can save only one of you." Devayani replied, "Father, there is no one more important to me than Kach. If you are not there, how will I live?" Shukracharya, helpless, cursed Kach that he would not be able to use Sanjeevani Vidya himself. After the curse, Shukracharya revived Kach. Kach emerged by tearing open Shukracharya's stomach and then revived Shukracharya with Sanjeevani Vidya.

End of the Chapter

Kach had acquired Sanjeevani Vidya, but he could not use it himself. He took leave of his guru Shukracharya and returned to the Devaloka. Devayani remained in the ashram with a heavy heart. After Kach's departure, Devayani's life took a new turn. Later, she married King Yayati, as a result of which she had to face a curse.

Summary of Chapter 4: In this chapter, we read about the love between Kach and Devayani and the curse received by Kach. It is shown that true devotion and loyalty to the guru are always fruitful, no matter how many obstacles come in the way. True love demands sacrifice.
