Shukracharya, the Guru of the Asuras

In the previous chapter, we learned about Shukracharya's quest for divine knowledge. Through rigorous penance and spiritual practice, he pleased Lord Shiva and obtained the Mrita Sanjeevani Vidya (the knowledge of reviving the dead). This unique knowledge had the power to bring the deceased back to life. Now, this Vidya was about to prove to be an invaluable boon for the Asuras, and set their destiny on a new course.

The Asuras Choose Him as Their Guru

The world of the Asuras was fading in comparison to the glory and power of the Devas. They were constantly being defeated in battles, and their morale was broken. Their guru, Maharshi Ushana, who later became famous as Shukracharya, returned to the Asuras after his penance. His radiance was like the sun, and his eyes shone with divine knowledge. The Asuras recognized him instantly, knowing that the time for their suffering to end had arrived. They fell at his feet, their eyes filled with hope and devotion.

The king of the Asuras, Vrishparva, joined his hands and said, "O Gurudev, we have fallen. The Devas have defeated us in every battle. Guide us. Tell us how we can escape this destruction." Shukracharya replied in a calm voice, "Fear not, O Asuras. I have obtained the Mrita Sanjeevani Vidya. Now, no battle can defeat you, for I will revive your fallen soldiers." A ray of hope ignited in the hearts of the Asuras.

The Conflict of the Asuras with the Devas

After Shukracharya became their guru, the conflict between the Asuras and the Devas intensified. Devaraj Indra was worried about the growing influence of the Asuras. He learned that Shukracharya possessed the Mrita Sanjeevani Vidya and was reviving the Asuras with its power. After every battle, while the army of the Devas dwindled, the strength of the Asuras remained intact. The Devas made several attempts to stop Shukracharya, but they were unsuccessful.

Once, Indra attempted to capture Shukracharya using his illusion, but Shukracharya freed himself with his yogic powers. He warned the Asuras, "The Devas will use deceit and spread illusions, but you must remain steadfast. Never abandon the path of truth and righteousness. I will protect you; as long as I live, no one can defeat you." The morale of the Asuras increased further, and they began to fight with even greater valor. After every battle, Shukracharya would revive the dead Asuras, thus keeping their army perpetually strong. His Sanjeevani Vidya had instilled fear in the Devas.

Shukracharya's Assistance

Shukracharya was not just a guru; he was a father, a protector, and a guide to the Asuras. He taught them about dharma, ethics, and justice. He told them that power should be used only for the protection of righteousness, not for oppressing others. He united the Asuras and made them a powerful community. The Asuras were no longer just destructive demons but had become an organized and disciplined force, led by a wise and powerful guru.

Shukracharya knew that this conflict would be long. The power of the Devas was immense, and they would not give up easily. Therefore, he asked the Asuras to be prepared for the times to come. He told them that they must recognize their limitations and fight battles wisely. He cultivated qualities of patience, courage, and devotion in the Asuras, making them ready to face any situation. Shukracharya's arrival in the lives of the Asuras marked the beginning of a new era that would influence generations to come. However, the worry of the Devas persisted, as Shukracharya's influence had grown significantly, and the only way to stop him was to outwit him, for which they would devise a new plan. This plan would give birth to the story of Devayani and Kacha, which is described in the upcoming chapter.
