Vamana Avatar Katha – Chapter 7: Blessing Mahabali and Patala
Blessing to Mahabali and Patala
In the previous chapter, Lord Vishnu, in his Vamana avatar, asked King Mahabali for three paces of land as a donation. With his colossal form, he measured heaven and earth in two steps. Now, with no space left to place his third step, Mahabali found himself in a moral dilemma. His subjects and he himself were astonished by the might of Vamana Deva.
Surrender and Remorse
Silence pervaded Mahabali's palace. His eyes held a mixture of remorse and devotion. He had realized that Vamana was no ordinary Brahmin boy, but Vishnu himself. His ego was shattered, and his generosity and righteousness were being tested. The gods and sages understood Mahabali's devotion and courage. They were all eager to witness this wondrous sight and see what decision Mahabali would make next.
Mahabali said to his wife, Vindhyavali, "Goddess, I have recognized the Lord. I have nothing left to give, except my own ego. I believe that the Lord's decision will be best for my subjects. Now I must fulfill my promise, whatever the consequence may be."
Vishnu's Blessing to Mahabali
Vamana Deva said in a grave tone, "King, you have pleased me with your integrity and commitment. You have nothing left now, but your heart is filled with devotion and righteousness. Therefore, I shall place my third step on your head." As Vamana placed his third step on Mahabali's head, Mahabali surrendered completely to Vishnu. He fell to the ground, but peace was on his face.
Lord Vamana, pleased, said, "O Mahabali, your fame will spread across the three worlds due to this surrender. I grant you the kingdom of the netherworld (Patala Loka), where you will reign with happiness and prosperity forever. Every year, you may come to Earth to meet your subjects, and on that day, you will be worshipped. This will be the festival of Onam. And in the future, you will ascend to the throne of Indra when you are worthy. My blessings will always be with you."
Conclusion of the Vamana Avatar
Mahabali bowed to Lord Vishnu and departed for Patala Loka. The gods showered flowers from the sky, and the sages chanted the victory of Lord Vishnu. The purpose of the Vamana avatar was fulfilled. Lord Vishnu appeared in his true form and blessed everyone. This avatar was a symbol of the establishment of righteousness and the destruction of ego.
Lord Vishnu said, "Whoever hears or reads this story will be inspired to always walk the path of righteousness. Truth, commitment, and surrender are the true guides in life. My blessings will remain upon all those who follow these values." With this, the story of the Vamana avatar concludes, inspiring us to always remain devoted to righteousness and the Lord.
Summary of Chapter 7: This chapter concludes with Mahabali's surrender to Vishnu, Vishnu granting Mahabali the kingdom of Patala Loka, the blessing of becoming Indra in the future, and the completion of the Vamana avatar. This story teaches us that renouncing ego and complete surrender to God is the path to liberation.
