Chapter 8 of the Story of Lanka Victory — War with Ravana. A fierce battle takes place between Rama and Ravana, and in the end, Rama slays Ravana.

War with Ravana

After the construction of the bridge, the Vanara army stood at the gates of Lanka. An atmosphere of fear pervaded Ravana's city, but his arrogance remained unshaken. Rama, organizing his army, was strategizing for the war, so that righteousness could be established and injustice ended.

Angada's Entry into Lanka as an Envoy

Rama considered seriously and sent Angada to Ravana's court with a final proposal for peace. Angada, the son of Vali, was young and fearless. The grand gates of the golden city of Lanka were open, as if inviting a terrible storm. Angada entered the full assembly, where Ravana sat on a throne studded with jewels, surrounded by his valiant warriors. Angada's face radiated brilliance, his body possessed strength, and his heart held the name of Rama.

Angada fearlessly said, "O King of Lanka, Ravana, Shri Rama has given you a final opportunity. Return Mother Sita with honor and ask for forgiveness. Otherwise, the destruction of this city is certain." Ravana turned red with anger, "Who is this Vanara who has come to teach me policy? Does he not know of my prowess! Soldiers, seize him!" Angada, with a single blow, felled several soldiers and then shook Ravana's throne with his strength. "This is just the beginning, Ravana. I am Rama's envoy, hence I am leaving alive. Be prepared to face the consequences."

Slaying of Kumbhakarna

After Angada's return, the conch of war was sounded. Ravana sent his mighty sons and brothers to battle. Indrajit, Meghnada, were wreaking havoc on the battlefield. But Rama's Vanara army was also displaying incredible valor. Then Kumbhakarna was awakened. The gigantic Kumbhakarna caused chaos as soon as he woke up. He began to devour Rama's army. The Vanaras, terrified, fled in all directions.

Rama saw that Kumbhakarna's terror was increasing. He said to Lakshmana, "Lakshmana, this demon must be ended now." Lakshmana rained arrows upon Kumbhakarna, but they had no effect on the demon. Finally, Rama himself came forward. His divine arrows severed Kumbhakarna's limbs. Uttering "Rama-Rama," Kumbhakarna fell to the ground. A wave of joy swept through the Vanara army. It was by Rama's grace that such a powerful warrior was slain, paving the way for the establishment of righteousness. The name of Rama itself holds such power that it can overcome every obstacle.

Slaying of Ravana

After the slaying of Kumbhakarna, Ravana was filled with grief and anger. He vowed that he himself would slay Rama. Ravana mounted his chariot and entered the battlefield. A fierce battle ensued between Ravana and Rama. Both were great warriors, and the sky echoed with their weapons. Ravana assumed many forms through his illusions, but Rama's arrows foiled every one of his illusions.

Finally, Rama used the Brahmastra. That arrow pierced Ravana's heart and passed through. Ravana fell from his chariot. His ten heads rolled on the ground. Chaos erupted in Lanka. Ravana had met his end, and righteousness had triumphed. With the slaying of Ravana, the sins of Lanka ended, and the path to Mother Sita's liberation was paved. Now, the reign of righteousness would be established in Lanka.

Summary of Chapter 8: In this chapter, we saw how Rama sent Angada with a peace proposal, slew Kumbhakarna, and finally established righteousness by slaying Ravana. This chapter teaches us that arrogance and injustice are destined to end, and truth always triumphs.
