Sudama and Krishna Story – Chapter 2: Farewell and Married Life

Farewell and Married Life
The previous chapter concluded with the unbreakable bond between Krishna and Sudama in the Gurukul and the sweet memories of their childhood. Now it was time to build a new life on the foundation of that close friendship, as both were about to move forward on their destined paths. Upon completion of education at the Gurukul, the moment of farewell approached, which was heart-wrenching.
Guru's Blessing
The peaceful atmosphere of the Gurukul was filled with tearful eyes and heavy hearts on the day of farewell. Guru Sandipani called both disciples to him. His voice was filled with affection and blessings. The other disciples of the ashram also surrounded them, everyone saddened by the separation. The golden rays of the sun were touching the trees of the ashram, as if nature itself was participating in this farewell.
Guru Sandipani said, "Krishna, I know that you are the protector of the world. You have incarnated to establish righteousness. Sudama, you are a symbol of knowledge and sacrifice. Both of you will give a new direction to the world. My blessings are always with you." Krishna and Sudama touched the Guru's feet, with tears of gratitude in their eyes. Sudama thought in his mind, "May Guru Ji's words be true, I will try to walk on Krishna's path." Krishna also bowed to Guru Ji and resolved in his mind that he would make every possible effort to establish righteousness.
Krishna's Departure to Dwarkapuri
After the farewell, Krishna departed for Dwarkapuri. Over time, he became the king of Dwarka. He led his people skillfully and protected righteousness. His kingdom was full of happiness and prosperity. Krishna always kept his word and helped the weak. His fame spread in all directions. Krishna made Dwarkapuri an ideal state, where justice and love prevailed. He destroyed many demons and freed the earth from sin.
Even after becoming king, Lord Krishna did not forget his childhood friend Sudama. He often thought about Sudama and wished for his well-being. Krishna knew that Sudama lived away from worldly pleasures, absorbed in devotion to God, but he also knew that Sudama was living a life of poverty. He resolved in his mind that he would definitely help Sudama, but he wanted Sudama to ask him for help himself.
Sudama's Domestic Life
On the other hand, Sudama chose to live a simple life. He got married and his life was spent in poverty. He was knowledgeable in the Vedas and scriptures, but he never desired to earn wealth. His wife Susheela was a devout woman and supported her husband in every situation. Their children often longed for food, but Sudama never abandoned his righteousness. Sudama's life was a symbol of renunciation and penance.
Sudama's poverty was increasing, but he never thought of asking Lord Krishna for help. He believed that God was testing him and he had to remain steadfast in his devotion. One day, his wife Susheela urged him to go to Dwarka to meet Krishna and ask for help. In the next chapter, we will see how Sudama is inspired to meet Krishna at his wife's insistence.
Summary of Chapter 2: In this chapter, we read about Krishna and Sudama's departure from the Gurukul, Krishna going to Dwarkapuri and becoming king, and Sudama living a life of poverty. From this chapter, we learn that a true friend does not forget his friend even in happiness and prosperity, and God tests those who remain steadfast in their devotion.
