Kurma Avatar Story – Chapter 3: The Churning Process
The Process of Churning
In the previous chapter, we saw how the Devas and Asuras together began the arduous task of Samudra Manthan (Ocean Churning). Vasuki Naga became the rope, Mandarachal mountain became the churning rod, and Lord Vishnu in his Kurma Avatar became the base. Now, it remained to be seen what would emerge from this great sacrifice, and whether this cooperation would last.
The Emergence of Kalakuta Poison
The Samudra Manthan was proceeding at a rapid pace. The pain of Vasuki Naga was unbearable, but they endured it all in the hope of Amrita (nectar). Mandarachal mountain was rotating at its own speed, and the Ksheer Sagar (Ocean of Milk) was churning violently. Suddenly, from the intensity and energy of the churning, a terrible poison emerged – Halahala. This poison was so potent that its flames began to burn the three worlds. Both the Devas and Asuras were terrified. There was a cry of distress due to the ferocity of Halahala. Everywhere there was chaos and suffocation.
There was fear among the Devas. "What is happening? Forget Amrita, this is a sign of destruction!" There was also concern among the Asuras. "If this poison burns the entire universe, what is the use of Amrita?" Everyone began to worry about their own lives. They did not understand how to get out of this dire situation.
Shiva's Benevolent Intervention
The Devas praised Lord Shiva, praying to him to save the world from this poison. Lord Shiva, who is the beginning and the end, who is benevolent, appeared immediately. He opened his matted locks and took the Halahala poison in his cupped hands. Mother Parvati was worried, but Shiva knew that this was the only way to save the world. Lord Shiva, chanting "Om Namah Shivaya," drank that potent poison.
Lord Vishnu's grace was unique. By his blessing, the poison got stuck in Lord Shiva's throat, turning it blue. That is why Lord Shiva came to be known as Neelkanth (the blue-throated one). It was the power of Lord Vishnu that prevented the poison from spreading throughout Shiva's body, and saved the world from destruction. Seeing this spectacle, both the Devas and Asuras began to chant Shiva's victory.
The Revelation of Gems from Amrita Manthan
After the poison subsided, the Samudra Manthan resumed. This time, wonderful gems began to emerge one by one from the churning. First emerged Kamadhenu cow, who fulfills all desires. Then emerged Uchchaihshravas horse, famous for its speed and beauty. The elephant Airavata emerged, which became Indra's vehicle. Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of beauty and prosperity, appeared from the ocean and chose Lord Vishnu as her consort.
The Devas were overjoyed seeing all this. By the grace of Lord Vishnu, the ocean had returned to its peace, and divine objects were appearing one after another. But the story was not over yet. Mandarachal mountain was heavy, and Ksheer Sagar was deep. Slowly, the mountain began to sink, causing concern among the Devas once again. In the next chapter, we will see how Lord Vishnu resolves this problem.
Summary of Chapter 3: In this chapter, we saw the emergence of Halahala poison during Samudra Manthan and how Lord Shiva drank it to save the world. After this, gems like Kamadhenu, Uchchaihshravas, Airavata, and Goddess Lakshmi emerged from the churning. From this chapter, we learn that in times of crisis, faith in God and acting selflessly leads to well-being.
