Indra and Vritra Story – Chapter 6: The Battle of Indra and Vritrasura

The Battle of Indra and Vritrasura
Armed with the Vajra, forged from the bones of Maharishi Dadhichi, Lord Indra was now ready to face Vritrasura. The previous chapter, which narrated the making of the Vajra, had infused new energy into the gods. Now, it was time to display that energy on the battlefield. The celestial army of the gods was alert in the sky, while on the other side, Vritrasura stood with his colossal demonic army, as if a scene of cosmic destruction had unfolded.
The Beginning of the Battle
As soon as Indra blew his conch, the bugle of war sounded. Gods and demons fell upon each other. A rain of arrows, like clouds, began to fall from the sky, and weapons like the Vajra clashed. The army of the gods echoed with slogans of 'Har Har Mahadev' and 'Jai Indra', while the demon army filled the atmosphere with the cry of 'Vritrasura Amar Rahe' (Long live Vritrasura), instilling fear. The earth trembled, as if two mighty mountains were colliding.
Indra was surrounded by the gods, who were protecting him. The face of the king of gods was radiant with divine light, as if the sun itself had descended onto the battlefield. Indra said to his charioteer, Matali, "Matali, take us to Vritrasura. Today, the end of this demon is certain; he has caused immense suffering to the gods and sages." Matali immediately turned Indra's chariot towards Vritrasura.
The Great War of Indra and Vritrasura
Indra and Vritrasura came face to face. The gods themselves were terrified by Vritrasura's colossal body, as if a mouth capable of swallowing the entire universe was before them. Vritrasura, in his fury, attacked Indra, but Indra nimbly foiled the blow. Then Indra raised his Vajra, which contained the penance of Rishi Dadhichi and the power of the gods. Indra hurled the Vajra towards Vritrasura, saying, "O demon, your cup of sins is now full; your end is certain!"
Vritrasura's body trembled with the immense power of the Vajra. The Vajra struck directly into Vritrasura's heart. With a terrible roar, Vritrasura fell to the ground. His death sent a wave of joy through the gods. In the sky, the gods and sages began to sing praises of Indra, "Victory to Indra, victory to the king of gods, you have freed the world from the atrocities of Vritrasura." Indra joined his hands and greeted all the gods and sages. It was due to Indra's valor that righteousness triumphed today.
Towards Victory
With the slaying of Vritrasura, the demon army was thrown into disarray. The gods, having achieved victory over the demons, returned to heaven. Indra sat on his throne and blessed the gods. Peace returned to the Earth, the waters of the rivers became pure, plants and trees bloomed, and the sages performed sacrifices without fear. Now, Indra would establish eternal peace and prosperity in the heavenly realm, but how this peace would be established will be described in the next chapter.
Summary of Chapter 6: This chapter describes the fierce battle between Indra and Vritrasura, in which Indra slayed Vritrasura with his Vajra.
