Chapter 7 of the Indra and Vritra story — Victory and Eternal Peace. After the slaying of Vritrasura, peace is established in the Devaloka and Dharma is established.

Victory and Eternal Peace

After the slaying of Vritrasura, the celestial realm was plunged into a deep stillness. The ferocity of the war, the reign of blood and fear, had now ended, but the sprout of peace was still tender and needed time to flourish. Indra was victorious, undoubtedly, but a deep remorse weighed on his heart, a burden that needed to be alleviated.

The Arrival of Peace in the Celestial Realm

The land of the celestial realm, wounded by the scars of war, was now slowly healing. A cool breeze was blowing, carrying away the stench of battle. The sun's rays pierced through the clouds, falling upon the earth as if nature itself was welcoming Indra's victory. The Apsaras and Gandharvas had returned with their veenas, and their melodious music had revitalized the atmosphere of the celestial realm. Smiles returned to the faces of the gods, and hope began to dawn in their hearts.

Indra sat on his throne, but his gaze was fixed on the distant horizon. Vritrasura's last words echoed in his mind. "Was this victory truly just?" he asked himself. "In protecting dharma, did I not tread the path of adharma?" These questions arising in his heart made him restless. He knew he had to atone to find liberation from this remorse.

The Restoration of Dharma

Indra summoned Guru Brihaspati and urged him to resolve his doubts. Brihaspati listened patiently to Indra and imparted the subtle knowledge of dharma. He said, "Indra, what you did was necessary for the protection of the celestial realm and dharma. Though slaying Vritrasura was a misdeed, its purpose was noble. Your act was for the restoration of dharma and the protection of your subjects."

Brihaspati suggested Indra perform a yajna, through which he could atone for his sins and purify his mind. Indra agreed and immediately began preparations for the yajna. This yajna was performed in the presence of gods, sages, and the people. In the fire of the yajna, Indra offered his remorse, and the burden on his heart lightened. At the end of the yajna, Indra received blessings from all the gods and sages, and he resolved to walk the path of dharma.

Indra's Glory and Honor

After the yajna, peace and prosperity resided in the celestial realm. Indra's glory and honor increased even further. The gods revered him as the King of Gods and obeyed his commands. In his reign, Indra made the celestial realm an ideal kingdom, where all were happy and prosperous. He upheld justice and dharma and protected his subjects.

One day, as Indra sat in his assembly, Sage Narada appeared. Sage Narada blessed Indra and said, "Indra, you have achieved fame in all three worlds through your deeds. Your name will remain immortal for ages to come." Indra bowed to Sage Narada and expressed his desire to learn more about dharma and knowledge. Sage Narada explained the importance of devotion and renunciation, and Indra held his words in his heart. He realized that victory is fleeting, but the path of eternal peace and dharma is the ultimate truth. That eternal peace now became the goal of Indra's life, a goal that would continue to inspire him in the ages to come.

Summary of Chapter 7: After the slaying of Vritrasura, peace is established in the celestial realm. Indra repents his actions and performs a yajna for the restoration of dharma. In the end, Indra's glory is established, and he moves towards the path of eternal peace. This story teaches us that even after victory, it is essential to uphold dharma and atone for one's actions.
