Support of the Kurma Avatar

In the previous chapter, we saw that after the Mandara mountain became the churning rod in the Samudra Manthan (ocean churning), it was repeatedly sinking without any support. Both the gods and the demons were tired, worried, and helpless. All their strength, all their efforts seemed to be in vain. Then, the compassion of Lord Vishnu, the remover of obstacles, was awakened.

Lord Vishnu's Kurma Form

A cloud of despair and disappointment hovered around the Samudra Manthan. Even the powerful demons were exhausted. The strength of the gods was also waning. The enormous Mandara mountain could not support itself under its own weight, repeatedly sinking into the ocean. Just then, a divine light spread across the sky. The light was so intense that it dazzled everyone's eyes. Then, slowly, the light subsided, and everyone saw that Lord Vishnu had appeared in the form of a giant Kurma (tortoise). His shell was so vast and strong that it seemed like a mountain itself. His calm and radiant eyes offered assurance to all.

Looking towards the gods, Vishnu in the form of Kurma said in a calm voice, "O gods, do not worry. I am here. I will bear this mountain on my back. You all continue the churning without hindrance. This churning will be beneficial for both the gods and the demons." His words held reassurance, strength, and a good omen for the future. A ray of hope appeared on the faces of the gods and demons.

The Support of the Churning: The Kurma Avatar

Lord Vishnu entered the ocean in his giant Kurma form. He placed the Mandara mountain on his back. The mountain was now stable, unwavering. The gods and demons again wrapped Vasuki Naga around it as a rope and began churning. The churning now proceeded without any obstruction. The Mandara mountain was no longer sinking into the ocean. Lord Vishnu's Kurma form had effortlessly borne the weight of that enormous mountain.

By the grace of Lord Vishnu, the Mandara mountain became stable. Neither the gods nor the demons were experiencing any trouble. The process of churning intensified. The ocean began to churn, and one by one, precious objects started appearing. All this was made possible by the power of the Kurma Avatar. Lord Vishnu took this form to protect his devotees and establish righteousness. His divine play is immeasurable, his power infinite.

Waiting for the Amrita

In his Kurma form, Lord Vishnu supported the Mandara mountain, facilitating the smooth continuation of the Samudra Manthan. The churning was now progressing towards its climax. There was anticipation for the appearance of various gems, medicinal herbs, and finally, the pot of Amrita (nectar of immortality). Both the gods and the demons were eager to obtain the Amrita, but what would happen next remained to be seen. In the next chapter, we will learn about the appearance of the Amrita and the conflict associated with it.
