Chamunda Mata Katha – Chapter 3: The Attack of Chand and Mund

The Attack of Chand and Mund
In the previous chapter, we saw how the magnificent form of Ambika manifested from Goddess Parvati, her radiance spreading across the three worlds. Now, two cruel generals of Mahishasura, Chand and Mund, advance in search of that divine light, unaware that what is coming will be the cause of their destruction.
The Vision of Chand and Mund
On the distant horizon, Chand and Mund beheld a wondrous sight. On a mountaintop, where the sun's rays shone like gold, stood a divine woman. Her radiance was such that it dazzled the eyes, and her beauty was such that even the celestial nymphs of heaven would be ashamed. Chand, known for his cruelty, paused for a moment. Mund, who was more cunning, his eyes gleamed with greed.
Mund said to Chand, "Look, Chand! How beautiful this woman is! She is the glory of heaven, worthy of our lord, Mahishasura. We must take her immediately and present her at Mahishasura's feet." Chand, suppressing his cruelty, said, "Yes, Mund. You speak truly. Such a gem must surely belong to our lord. Come, let us capture her and bring her." The feelings of lust and greed awakened in their hearts, and they became eager to possess that Goddess.
The Departure of the Messenger
Chand and Mund sent one of their messengers to Goddess Ambika. The messenger, trembling with fear, approached the Goddess, his words barely escaping his lips. He said in a quivering voice, "O Goddess! The generals of Mahishasura, Chand and Mund, wish to take you to their lord. They desire you to become Mahishasura's wife and serve him. You must come with us."
Goddess Ambika smiled gently. There was not a trace of anger on her face, but rather an expression of compassion. She said in a calm voice, "I have vowed that I will marry whoever defeats me in battle. If Mahishasura and his generals wish to marry me, they must fight me." There was such power in the Goddess's voice that the messenger trembled with fear and immediately returned to Chand and Mund. This was a way for the Goddess to challenge them to battle and pave the way for the establishment of Dharma.
The Attack of the Demons
Upon the messenger's return, Chand and Mund were filled with rage. They ordered their vast army to attack the Goddess. In an instant, countless demons roared and rushed towards the Goddess. They raised swords, spears, and maces, and surrounded the Goddess. Their objective was to forcibly capture the Goddess and present her before Mahishasura.
Goddess Ambika stood calm and steady. There was neither fear nor worry on her face. Her divine eyes held a wonderful confluence of compassion and power. As the demons approached, the Goddess let out a lion's roar, which echoed through the sky. The hearts of the demons trembled at that roar, and they were filled with fear. This was a sign of the Goddess's wrath, which was about to manifest. Now, battle was inevitable. In the next chapter, we will see how the fierce battle of Goddess Chamunda unfolds.
Summary of Chapter 3: In this chapter, Goddess Ambika is seen by Chand and Mund and they desire to obtain her for Mahishasura. Through their messenger, the Goddess issues a challenge, followed by the attack of the demons. This chapter shows how ego and lust can lead to destruction.
