Chapter 6 of the Tulsi Mata Katha — Vrinda's Curse and Transformation. Vrinda discovers Vishnu's deceit and curses him, then dedicates herself to the fire and transforms into the Tulsi plant.

Vrinda's Curse and Transformation

With the defeat of Jalandhar, the gods breathed a sigh of relief. However, a fire of grief burned in Vrinda's heart, which slowly turned into anger. She was not yet aware of the great deception that had been played upon her. She was desperate to know the cause of her husband's death and set out in search of the truth.

Unveiling the Truth

Vrinda reached the battlefield. Seeing Jalandhar's lifeless body there, her heart cried out. Tears streamed from her eyes. She touched her husband's body and wiped the dust from his face. Then she looked around, where she found something amiss. The rules of war had been broken, it was clear. Her inner conscience was shaking her, as if someone was waking her up. She felt that something had happened that she did not know, a terrible secret was hidden.

She looked in all four directions, then she saw a shadow. A divine man was standing behind a peepal tree. She slowly went towards him and asked the man, "O divine one, what happened here? How did my husband die? Tell me the truth." The divine man bowed his head and said, "Goddess, you have been deceived. Lord Vishnu, by breaking your chastity, has aided the gods. He created an illusion, took the form of your husband and..." As soon as she heard this, the ground slipped from under Vrinda's feet.

Vrinda's Curse

Vrinda's heart was filled with anger and pain. The Lord Vishnu, in whom she had placed so much faith, had betrayed her. Flames of anger began to emanate from her eyes. In a trembling voice, she said, "O Vishnu! You have broken my trust, insulted my chastity. You have violated my honor through deceit, therefore I curse you that you will turn into stone!" Saying this, Vrinda cursed Lord Vishnu with all her might, and at that very moment, Lord Vishnu transformed into a stone idol. This stone form came to be known as Shaligram.

As Tulsi, Vrinda taught the importance of trust and loyalty. She sent a message to the world that deceit is not acceptable in any form, and truth always triumphs. Vrinda's curse was a lesson for Lord Vishnu, and a warning for humankind.

Self-Immolation and Transformation into Tulsi

Vrinda could not bear the death of her husband and the deceit that had been played upon her. She felt that her life had no meaning anymore. She decided that she would become a Sati with her husband. Vrinda had a pyre made and offered herself along with her husband's body. As soon as the fire was lit, Vrinda's body turned to ashes, but from her ashes, a plant emerged. This plant was of Tulsi.

Lord Vishnu realized his mistake and apologized to Vrinda. He embraced Tulsi and said that this plant would always be with him and would hold special significance in his worship. Tulsi would be honored like Goddess Lakshmi, and no worship would be considered complete without her. This is why Tulsi holds such importance in Hinduism even today. In the next chapter, we will learn more about the importance and blessings of Tulsi.

Summary of Chapter 6: In this chapter, we heard the story of the deceit played upon Vrinda, Vrinda's curse upon Vishnu, and Vrinda's self-immolation and transformation into Tulsi. This chapter teaches us that deceit is never successful, and the consequences of betrayal are always dire. Vrinda's curse and her sacrifice are symbols of the power of devotion, faith, and chastity.
