Kamakhya Devi Katha – Chapter 3: Kamdev's Rebirth Curse

The Curse of Kamadeva's Rebirth
The creation trembled with Shiva's sorrow. In separation from Sati, Lord Shiva was plunged into deep grief. The gods were worried that Shiva's detachment would disrupt the balance of creation. Indra and other gods decided that it was necessary to bring Shiva back into worldly life. But the question was, who would undertake this task?
Kamadeva's Audacity
Devraj Indra was worried. Shiva's penance was so intense that no ordinary person could dare to disturb it. In the entire celestial realm, only Kamadeva, the god of love and desire, could perform this difficult task. Kamadeva was sitting with his wife Rati in Amravati when Indra's messenger reached him. Kamadeva knew how risky this task was, but for the protection of the gods, he was ready to sacrifice his life. He looked at Rati, whose eyes were clouded with worry.
Kamadeva said to his wife Rati, "My dear, I know this is a difficult task, but I must do it for the well-being of the gods. Shiva's grief is harmful to creation. I must break his penance, even if it means sacrificing my life." Rati replied with tear-filled eyes, "I know, my lord. You are destined to serve the gods. My heart is restless, but I will be your strength. You will surely succeed."
Shiva's Wrath and Kamadeva's Incineration
Kamadeva created the spring season. The fragrance of flowers spread all around, the cuckoo began to sing, and an atmosphere of love began to permeate. Kamadeva, along with his friend Vasant (Spring), reached the place where Shiva was performing penance. He raised his bow and shot a flower arrow at Shiva. Shiva's meditation was broken. He opened his third eye, from which a terrible fire emerged. In the flames of that fire, Kamadeva was reduced to ashes in an instant. Rati's lament was heard even in heaven. The gods were terrified, as Shiva's anger was extremely destructive. The gods realized that they had made a terrible mistake by sending Kamadeva.
Kamakhya Devi, the embodiment of compassion, was witnessing this scene. She felt great pity for Rati's sorrow. She thought, 'What a paradox! Kamadeva, the symbol of love, was incinerated while protecting love. I understand Rati's grief. She deserves justice.' Kamakhya Devi offered a prayer filled with love and compassion from her heart.
The Creation of Kamrup and the Curse of Rebirth
The gods prayed to Shiva to calm down and forgive Kamadeva. Shiva said that it was not possible to bring Kamadeva back to life completely, as his ashes had spread throughout the universe. However, hearing their prayer, Shiva cursed Kamadeva with rebirth. He said that Kamadeva would retain the influence of his love and desire without a body. He also said that Kamadeva would be born in his next life as Pradyumna, the son of Lord Vishnu and Rukmini. The place where Kamadeva was incinerated would be known as Kamrup, which would be the abode of Kamakhya Devi.
Summary of Chapter 3: In this chapter, we heard the story of Kamadeva's attempt to break Shiva's penance and his incineration. Shiva cursed Kamadeva with rebirth and made that place Kamrup, from where Narakasura would later emerge. From this story, we learn that every action has a consequence, how destructive anger can be, and we also witness the compassion of Kamakhya Devi.
