Tripura Sundari Katha – Chapter 2: Rebirth of Kamadeva

The Rebirth of Kamadeva
In the previous chapter, we heard the divine form and glory of Adi Shakti Tripura Sundari. Now we continue the story where Kamadeva, who binds the world in the chains of love and beauty, is burnt by Shiva's wrath, and is reborn in a new form, dedicating himself once again to the devotion of Tripura Sundari.
The Fire and Ashes of Love
Shiva was engrossed in deep penance, his eyes glowing with cosmic energy. Kamadeva, at the behest of the gods, arrived to disturb Shiva's penance. With his illusory power, he spread the illusion of spring; cuckoos began to coo, and bees started to swarm. However, disturbing Shiva's meditation was not so easy. His third eye opened, and from that fire, Kamadeva turned to ashes in an instant. Rati began to lament, her heart breaking in separation from her beloved. The entire universe was plunged into sorrow, for without Kamadeva, the very existence of love was in danger. Rati prayed to Shiva for the revival of her husband; hearing her compassionate plea, Shiva's heart melted.
Rati said in a sorrowful voice, "O Mahadeva! The foundation of my life, the symbol of my love, has been snatched away. Please, tell me how I will live now? Will the goddess of love herself be deprived of love?" Shiva replied in a grave tone, "Rati, it is true that Kamadeva's physical body has been reduced to ashes, but his power of love has not been destroyed. He will be reborn, in a new form, and the fruit of your waiting will surely be yours."
Kamadeva's New Birth – Pradyumna
Time passed, and in Dwarka, a beautiful child was born to Lord Krishna and Rukmini. He was named Pradyumna. This child was none other than the rebirth of Kamadeva. Pradyumna possessed all the qualities of Kamadeva – beauty, charm, and love. As Pradyumna grew, an extraordinary power of love and attraction began to manifest in him. Rati also stayed with him in a subtle form, indirectly contributing to his upbringing. She believed that one day she would recognize her beloved, and their union would happen again. Pradyumna also gradually began to feel memories of his past life; he felt an unknown attraction towards Tripura Sundari.
Tripura Sundari blessed Pradyumna, "O Kamadeva! You will be re-established as the god of love. Your new birth is solely for the establishment of love and beauty. Always maintain devotion in your heart towards me, and bring welfare to the world."
Absorbed in the Devotion of Tripura Sundari
Pradyumna realized his past life and the incident of his burning. He also came to know that Shiva had given him a new life only to immerse him in the devotion of Tripura Sundari. He began chanting the mantras of Tripura Sundari, dedicating his life to her worship. His love was not worldly, but divine; it was dedicated at the feet of Tripura Sundari. His devotion was so deep that Tripura Sundari herself was pleased with him and granted him a vision of her divine form. Pradyumna's life was now solely for the worship of Tripura Sundari and the propagation of love in the world.
Pradyumna thought to himself, "Tripura Sundari is the ultimate truth, the embodiment of love. My life is now dedicated to her service. With her blessings, I will re-establish love in the world." But Pradyumna did not know that he would later have to face a terrible demon named Bhandasura, who was a staunch opponent of Tripura Sundari and would oppress her devotees.
Summary of Chapter 2: This chapter narrates the story of Kamadeva's burning and his rebirth as Pradyumna. It shows that love is never destroyed; it always manifests in new forms. It also describes the power of devotion and the grace of Tripura Sundari. It teaches us that true love is not worldly but divine, and is dedicated at the feet of the Lord.
