Tulsi Mata Katha – Chapter 3: Plea for Help from the Gods

A Plea for Help from the Deities
In the previous chapter, we saw how Jalandhar, through his penance and immense powers, began to establish his empire across the three worlds. His strength was growing, and the gods were distressed by his increasing might. Jalandhar's tyranny was escalating day by day, causing chaos in the heavens. The gods could foresee their defeat.
The Gods' Arrival in Vishnu's Abode
Clouds of Jalandhar's terror began to loom over the heavens. Indra's throne started to shake, and even the boon of immortality seemed futile. Frightened and helpless, the gods, along with Lord Brahma, decided to seek refuge in Lord Vishnu for their protection. The divine atmosphere of Vishnu Loka was also affected by the gods' fear and anxiety. The beauty there seemed to have faded. Despair was evident on the faces of the gods, as they had lost faith in their own strength.
Lord Indra, with a trembling voice, said, "O Lord Vishnu, Jalandhar has caused widespread distress across the three worlds. We are all helpless before his power. Please protect us, Lord." Lord Brahma also joined his hands and pleaded, "Lord, if you do not help, then righteousness will be destroyed, and unrighteousness will prevail." The gods looked towards Lord Vishnu with hopeful eyes.
Vishnu's Plan to Defeat Jalandhar
Lord Vishnu listened attentively to the gods. He understood their fear and reassured them. Lord Vishnu knew that defeating Jalandhar in a direct battle was impossible, as he was invincible due to the chastity of his wife, Vrinda. The power of Vrinda's penance and her devotion to her husband was Jalandhar's shield. Therefore, Lord Vishnu devised a plan to weaken Jalandhar's strength. He explained to the gods that Jalandhar could only be defeated through deception.
It was through the grace of Mother Tulsi that Lord Vishnu conceived this idea. Vrinda's purity was akin to the Tulsi plant, which purifies the entire atmosphere with its fragrance. Lord Vishnu knew that Jalandhar could not be defeated without compromising Tulsi's purity. He also anticipated that in the future, he would have to atone for this deception.
Vishnu's Assurance to the Gods
Lord Vishnu said in a grave tone, "O deities, I will surely help you. To defeat Jalandhar, I will have to adopt a difficult path, which will involve deception. All of you, be patient and trust me. For the protection of righteousness, I must take this step." He added, "Do not worry, I will weaken Jalandhar's power by breaking Vrinda's vow of chastity. All of you return to your respective abodes and await my action." Hearing this, a ray of hope ignited in the hearts of the gods, and they bowed to Lord Vishnu and returned to their abodes. Now, in the next chapter, Lord Vishnu will adopt the path of deception.
Summary of Chapter 3: In this chapter, the gods, terrified by Jalandhar's power, sought help from Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu devised a plan to defeat Jalandhar, which involved deception, as Vrinda's chastity was Jalandhar's shield. This chapter teaches us that sometimes difficult decisions must be made for the protection of righteousness, but their consequences must also be borne.
