The Twenty-One Kshatriya Cycles

In the previous chapter, we saw how Parashurama vowed to avenge the murder of his father, Sage Jamadagni. After the death of Sahasrarjuna, Parashurama's anger did not subside. The burning flame of injustice in his heart had now transformed into a resolve to rid the earth of Kshatriyas twenty-one times. This chapter describes the fulfillment of that terrible vow.

The First War: The Annihilation of the Haihaya Empire

Parashurama's brow was furrowed, his eyes were red, and the axe in his hand shone like fire. The remaining warriors of the Haihaya empire, terrified, moved out of his way as if death itself stood before them. Parashurama's anger was not abating; he felt as if his father's screams were still echoing in the air. He hunted down and killed the sons and supporters of Sahasrarjuna. Rivers of blood flowed, and the earth turned red with blood. Even the gods trembled at his fierce form.

Parashurama roared, "The empire of unrighteousness will not last any longer! Whoever has oppressed Brahmins has no right to live on this earth! From today, this land will walk the path of Dharma!" There was no remorse in his heart, only an intense desire to avenge the insult to his father. He considered his actions necessary for the establishment of Dharma.

A Kshatriya-less Earth: Charity and Sacrifice

One after another, Parashurama defeated various Kshatriya kings in battle. He not only defeated the kings but also ended their unjust rule. The entire Aryavarta trembled with fear. Twenty-one times he made this earth devoid of Kshatriyas. After each victory, he gifted that land to the Brahmins. He performed great sacrifices, in which he donated immense wealth and grain. The land donated by him was so vast that even the gods were astonished to see it. He was an avatar of Vishnu, and therefore, every action performed by him was filled with divine power. Parashurama's body was radiant with divine splendor, reflecting the firmness of his resolve.

The illusion of Vishnu is immeasurable. Even Parashurama himself was unaware that he was fulfilling a greater purpose. He was establishing balance on earth, destroying unrighteousness, and establishing Dharma. The death of each Kshatriya king was a step towards freeing the earth from sin. Behind his anger was the power of Lord Vishnu himself, which was motivating him towards his goal.

A Hint Before Rama

Parashurama's anger showed no signs of subsiding. His valor continued to grow, and no one was willing to stand before his brilliance. His twenty-one Kshatriya cycles were about to be completed, but peace did not settle in his heart. He had a premonition, an unknown fear that signaled to him that his real battle was yet to come. Even after making the earth Kshatriya-less, his anger was not fully appeased, for destiny had arranged for him to meet another great warrior – Rama.
