Chapter 2 of Ahalya Uddhar Katha — Ram Janm and Vishwamitra. It describes the birth of Ram, the arrival of Sage Vishwamitra, and his taking Ram and Lakshman to slay demons.

Ram's Birth and Vishwamitra

In the previous chapter, we saw the story of Ahilya's beauty and her fall. Indra's deceit and Rishi Gautam's anger turned Ahilya into a stone. Now time moves forward, and an auspicious moment arrives in Ayodhya, adding a new chapter to this narrative.

Incarnation: The Birth of Ram

Waves of joy were spreading through the city of Ayodhya. A divine light filled the palace of King Dasharatha and Queen Kausalya. It was the ninth day of the Chaitra month, during the Punarvasu constellation, with planets and stars in auspicious positions in the sky. A divine child was born from Kausalya's womb. That child, whose eyes were like lotuses and whose face was as cool as the moon, was none other than Lord Vishnu himself, Ram. Dasharatha and Kausalya, with tear-filled eyes, took their son in their lap. The entire city of Ayodhya was immersed in the joy of Ram's birth, and celebrations began in every home. The sound of conch shells and Vedic chants echoed in all directions.

"O Lord, today you have blessed our lineage," Kausalya said, gazing at Ram. "How can we comprehend this incarnation of yours? This divine play is yours alone." King Dasharatha embraced his son and prayed silently, "O God, grant me the strength to serve this divine child and make him a worthy king."

The Arrival of Vishwamitra

Time passed, and Ram gradually began to grow. He played and learned with his brothers, Bharata, Lakshmana, and Shatrughna. One day, a radiant sage arrived in Ayodhya. He was Maharishi Vishwamitra, whose penance and knowledge were renowned far and wide. King Dasharatha welcomed the great sage with utmost respect. Vishwamitra told the king that he was performing an important yajna (ritual), but two demons named Tadaka and Subahu were disrupting it. He urged Dasharatha to send Ram and Lakshmana with him so they could slay those demons. Dasharatha hesitated to send his sons to fight such powerful demons.

"O King, I know you love your sons dearly," Vishwamitra said, "but this is a work of dharma. Ram and Lakshmana will not only protect the yajna but will also rid the earth of sin by slaying many other demons. This is their destiny." Ram looked at his father and said, "Father, please grant us permission to go with the great sage. It is our duty to protect dharma." There was such firmness in Ram's words that King Dasharatha gave him permission to go, though his heart was filled with fear. Ram and Lakshmana set off towards the forest with Vishwamitra, bows and arrows in their small hands, and enthusiasm in their hearts to destroy evil.

The Slaying of Tadaka and Subahu

Upon reaching the forest, Vishwamitra taught Ram and Lakshmana various martial arts and bestowed upon them divine weapons. Soon, the demoness Tadaka arrived roaring, her terrifying form striking fear into everyone. But Ram was not shaken in the least. He strung an arrow on his bow and struck Tadaka. The arrow hit Tadaka directly in the heart, and she fell with a scream. After Tadaka's slaying, Subahu attacked with his demonic companions. Ram unleashed an Agni-astra (fire arrow), killing Subahu and his companions. The yajna was completed without any hindrance, and Vishwamitra blessed Ram and Lakshmana. Thus, with his first act of valor, Ram pleased the gods and sages and took a significant step towards establishing dharma on Earth.

The slaying of Tadaka and Subahu was a great indication that Ram had incarnated on Earth solely to establish dharma. This event is a crucial step towards Ahilya's salvation, as only with the touch of Ram's feet could Ahilya be redeemed. Now Ram and Lakshmana proceed with Vishwamitra, towards Ahilya's hermitage, where a cursed stone awaits, yearning for its liberation.

Summary of Chapter 2: In this chapter, Ram is born, who is an incarnation of Vishnu and has come to Earth to establish dharma. The arrival of Vishwamitra and the slaying of Tadaka and Subahu by Ram demonstrate Ram's ability to conquer evil and protect dharma. This is an important step towards Ahilya's salvation, as only with the touch of Ram's feet can Ahilya be redeemed.
