Chapter 3 of the Draupadi Vastraharan Katha — The Assembly's Silence and Bhishma's Dilemma. The assembly remains silent at Draupadi's plight, and Grandfather Bhishma is caught in a moral crisis.

The Assembly's Silence and Bhishma's Dilemma

In the previous chapter, Dushasana made a terrible attempt to disrobe Draupadi. The entire assembly trembled with Draupadi's screams and her humiliation. Now, after that humiliation, a deep silence descended, as if time itself had stopped. This silence loomed as a question mark over Draupadi's future and the fate of the Kuru dynasty.

The Stunned Silence of the Assembly

Everyone present in the assembly sat motionless like stone statues. King Dhritarashtra lowered his gaze, perhaps realizing the great sin his sons had committed. Yudhishthira's face turned red with shame; he couldn't meet Draupadi's eyes, as he himself had caused this disaster by putting her on stake. Bhima was boiling with anger, his fists clenched, and his eyes spitting fire. Arjuna, Nakula, and Sahadeva were also smoldering inwardly seeing this injustice, but being bound by the ties of Dharma, they could do nothing. The entire assembly was plunged into a heart-wrenching silence by Draupadi's cries, a silence that signaled the coming storm. It was as if nature itself was mourning this vile deed. Only Draupadi's sobs echoed in this silence.

Yudhishthira thought to himself, "What have I done? How have I gambled with the honor of my lineage? Will I ever be able to forgive myself?"

Bhishma Pitamah's Moral Crisis

Bhishma Pitamah, a connoisseur of Dharma and ethics, was caught in a deep moral crisis. He knew that what was happening to Draupadi was sheer injustice, unrighteousness. But as a servant of the Kuru dynasty, he was bound. He had been nourished by the Kauravas' food and therefore could not go against them. A conflict was raging between Dharma and duty in his mind. His soul was screaming, but his tongue wouldn't cooperate; every question that arose in his mind challenged his years of penance and knowledge. He knew that if he remained silent, history would never forgive him. But he also knew that if he spoke, a civil war would erupt in the Kuru dynasty.

Bhishma Pitamah said to his inner self, "O God, what should I do? How do I get out of this moral dilemma? Is it right for me to remain silent?"

Draupadi's Plea for Justice

Draupadi, forgetting her humiliation and pain, was filled with hope for justice. She questioned everyone sitting in the assembly, "Is there no one in this assembly who can deliver justice to me? Have all the people sitting here become blind and deaf? Has Dharma been completely destroyed?" She repeatedly cried out in the full assembly, begging to save her honor, but everyone remained silent, as if no one had heard. Every word, every question of hers pierced the heart of the assembly, but no one had the courage to break that silence. Her hope was slowly shattering, but still, she did not give up. She knew that this was not just her question, but the question of the dignity of all womankind.

Draupadi prayed from her heart, "O Krishna, O Govinda, save my honor. Protect me. You are my last resort."
