The Blessing of the Sun and Kunti

In the royal palace of Hastinapur, the seeds of political discord were yet to sprout. After the untimely death of Maharaj Shantanu's son, Vichitravirya, his wives Ambika and Ambalika, with the blessings of Sage Vyasa, gave birth to two sons – Dhritarashtra and Pandu. However, destiny had other plans for Kunti's life, which were destined to become an inseparable part of the Kuru dynasty's saga.

The Boon of Sage Durvasa

Young Kunti, also known as Pritha in her childhood, was renowned for her kindness and spirit of service. Once, the irascible Sage Durvasa visited the palace of her father, Kuntibhoja. Pritha served him selflessly, attending to his every need. Sage Durvasa was immensely pleased with Pritha's devotion and dedication.

Sage Durvasa said with a smile, "O Pritha, I am extremely pleased with your service. I grant you a mantra, by which you can invoke any deity, and they will appear before you and grant you your heart's desire." Pritha looked at the sage with astonishment. Many questions arose in her mind, but she considered it her duty to obey the sage's command.

The Invocation of Surya Deva

One day, curiosity arose in young Kunti's mind. The desire to test the power of the mantra given by Sage Durvasa grew strong. She sat in solitude, meditated on Surya Deva, and began chanting the mantra. "Om Hreem Suryaya Namah!" the mantra echoed, and a divine aura filled the atmosphere. Slowly, golden rays began to shine in the sky.

Suddenly, Surya Deva appeared before Kunti. His radiance was unbearable, yet his aura reflected love and compassion. Surya Deva said in a grave voice, "O Kunti, you have invoked me. I have come to grant you a son. This son will be radiant, valiant, and generous." Kunti became frightened and distressed. She was unmarried, and the birth of a son could bring upheaval into her life. However, it was also impossible to refuse a deity's boon. At that very moment, Kunti gave birth to a son, who was as radiant as the sun. He was adorned with armor and earrings, which he had received from Surya Deva.

The Abandonment of Karna

Fearing social disgrace and societal pressure, Kunti made the difficult decision to abandon her newborn son. Her heart was filled with pain, but she had no other option. She placed her son in a basket and set him adrift in the river. This sorrow became the greatest secret of her life, a burden she carried in her heart throughout her life. Destiny had written a different future for that infant, who later came to be known as Karna and was destined to play a significant role in the history of the Mahabharata. The infant, floating in the river, was found by a charioteer named Adhiratha, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his life.
