Karna Meets Adhiratha

The previous chapter was the story of Surya Dev's blessings and Kunti's helplessness. Now the wheel of destiny turns, and on the banks of the river Ganga, fate is ready to write a new chapter. A charioteer named Adhiratha, whose heart was filled with the desire for a son, was about to witness this fateful moment.

Morning on the Banks of the Ganga

The first rays of the sun were dancing on the calm waters of the river Ganga. The sweet chirping of birds made the atmosphere devotional. Adhiratha, who was the charioteer of King Dhritarashtra of Anga Desha, had come for his daily bath in the Ganga as usual. His mind was calm, but his heart felt a void. He and his wife Radha, despite many years of marriage, were deprived of the joy of children. This pain pricked their hearts like a thorn, and they often prayed to God to grant them a child, even if it was for adoption.

Adhiratha took off his clothes and slowly stepped into the cool water. "O Mother Ganga," he prayed silently, "will my prayer ever be heard? Will I ever experience the joy of a child who will complete my life?" His body was submerged in the cool water, but his soul yearned for a son.

A Wonderful Infant Found in the Ganga

As Adhiratha was bathing, his gaze fell upon a strange object floating in the river Ganga. It was a small chest, shimmering in the sun's rays. Out of curiosity, Adhiratha swam to the chest and pulled it out. As he opened the chest, his eyes widened in astonishment. Inside lay a newborn infant, adorned with armor and earrings. The infant was so radiant that Adhiratha was reminded of Surya Dev.

This was a miracle, an unexpected grace. Adhiratha picked up the infant and looked at his tender face. This infant was no ordinary child. There was a divine radiance on his face, and his birth armor and earrings were extraordinary. Adhiratha understood that this was God's blessing, the answer to his prayers. By the grace of Surya Dev, he had found the son he had so ardently desired.

The Upbringing of Karna

Adhiratha took the infant to his wife Radha. When Radha saw the radiant child, tears welled up in her eyes. She took the child in her lap and held him close to her heart. Radha and Adhiratha named the child 'Vasushena', but Radha, seeing the earrings he wore, called him 'Karna', meaning 'born from the ear'. Karna became the center of Radha and Adhiratha's lives. They raised him with immense love and affection. They tried to give him every kind of happiness, and Karna, in turn, considered them his parents. This love and affection would play a significant role in making Karna a great warrior and a kind person. In the next chapter, we will see how Karna trains to become a warrior.
