Brihaspati Guru Katha – Chapter 3: Tara's Temptation and Struggle

Tara's Temptation and Struggle
Brihaspati, the guru of the gods, was known for his scholarship and ethics. His ashram was a center of knowledge, where gods and sages received education. However, destiny had something else written. In that atmosphere of happiness and peace, a seed was about to sprout that would cause upheaval not only in Brihaspati's life but in the entire universe - Tara's temptation.
Chandra's Attraction
Tara, Brihaspati's wife, was renowned for her beauty and intelligence. Her aura was calm and gentle, but an unknown restlessness stirred within her heart. One night, when the moon was full, Tara stood on the roof of her palace. The cool moonlight captivated her, and her heart filled with an unknown attraction. Chandra, the Moon God, was enthroned in the sky with his magnificent radiance, his brilliance mesmerizing Tara. It felt as if the moon himself was dancing in the sky to entice her. A strange stirring arose within her, pulling her towards the Moon God.
Tara said to herself, "What kind of attraction is this? I am Brihaspati's wife, this does not befit me. But this enchantment of the Moon God is such that I cannot stop myself."
Tara's Elopement
The Moon God was also captivated by Tara's beauty. He expressed his love for Tara through his messengers. Tara, already immersed in the Moon God's attraction, could not refuse his proposal of love. One dark night, when everyone was asleep, Tara eloped with the Moon God. This incident struck the gods like an earthquake. Brihaspati, who had unwavering faith in his wife, was broken by this betrayal.
In this tragic event, Brihaspati's patience became his strength. He did not make any inappropriate decision in anger but assessed the situation with a calm mind. He gathered the gods and pleaded with the Moon God to return Tara. He said, "Tara is my wife, and she must return to my ashram. It is essential to maintain decorum in any relationship."
War of Gods and Demons
The Moon God refused to return Tara, which led to a fierce war between the gods and demons. This war became a symbol of destruction on both heaven and earth. Powerful gods like Indra, Agni, and Varuna entered the war against the demons. Rivers of blood began to flow, and chaos ensued everywhere. The universe seemed to tremble. This war deepened the old differences between the gods and demons. Destruction and devastation were visible everywhere.
Brihaspati did not participate directly in this war but continued to guide the gods. With his knowledge and wisdom, he showed the gods the right path, which gave them strength in the war. He explained to the gods that anger and violence would achieve nothing, but solutions would emerge only through patience and restraint.
