Chapter 2 of the Amba Mata Katha — Parashurama's Failed Intervention. Amba prays to Parashurama for her help, but Parashurama fails to defeat Bhishma.

Parashurama's Failed Intervention

In the previous chapter, we learned about Amba's birth and her vow not to have Bhishma as her husband. Now, to fulfill her vow, Amba seeks refuge in Lord Parashurama, with the sole hope that he can liberate her from this injustice. The despair prevalent in Kurukshetra and the lament of Amba's heart now rested on Parashurama's valor.

Amba's Prayer

In the deep darkness of the forest, Amba reached Parashurama's ashram. Her body was weary, but the fire of revenge blazed in her eyes. In the serene atmosphere of the ashram, Amba fell at Parashurama's feet and narrated her plight. There was anguish in her voice, and the feeling of anger towards Bhishma was evident in every word. It seemed as if Mother Earth herself was pleading for justice for her daughter.

"O Lord," Amba said, weeping, "I have come to your refuge. Great injustice has been done to me. Bhishma forcibly abducted me and my sisters, but now he refuses to accept me as his wife. My life is ruined, and I have no recourse but suicide. O divine one, you alone can deliver justice to me."

The Battle Between Parashurama and Bhishma

Hearing Amba's sorrowful tale, Parashurama's anger flared up. He immediately challenged Bhishma to a battle. The land of Kurukshetra trembled once again, as two great warriors, guru and disciple, stood face to face. Parashurama's axe flashed like lightning, while Bhishma's Gandiva bow roared like death. A fierce battle ensued between them, a rain of arrows began, and flames of fire rose in the sky.

Amba, far from the battlefield, sat on a rock and prayed silently, "O Goddess! Grant me strength. May Lord Parashurama achieve victory, so that I may get justice and be freed from this insult." Her prayer held such power that even the gods in the heavens became restless. Amba's purity and firm resolve filled Parashurama's arrows with incredible strength. However, Bhishma was no less radiant; he thwarted every attack of his guru.

Parashurama's Failure

Days passed, and the battle continued. Parashurama exerted all his might, but Bhishma stood unyielding. Finally, Parashurama realized that defeating Bhishma was impossible. Destiny had perhaps written something else for Amba. Parashurama returned to Amba in despair and informed her of his failure. Amba's heart broke; her last hope also faded.

Parashurama said to Amba, "Daughter, I tried with all my strength, but I was unable to defeat Bhishma. The decree of fate is unchangeable. Now you must find your own path for your future." Hearing this, tears welled up in Amba's eyes. She understood that she now had to shape her own destiny. Burning in the fire of anger, despair, and humiliation, Amba decided to undertake severe penance and become the cause of Bhishma's destruction in her next life. This failure was, in fact, the beginning of a new journey for her.

Summary of Chapter 2: In this chapter, we saw that Amba seeks refuge in Lord Parashurama to get justice, but Parashurama also fails to defeat Bhishma. This disappoints Amba, but she does not give up and decides to perform penance. This chapter teaches us that even if we do not receive external help, we must continue to strive to achieve our goals and believe in our own strength.
