Vamana Avatar Katha – Chapter 6: The Universe in Three Steps
The Universe Encompassed in Three Steps
Ignoring Shukracharya's warning, King Mahabali resolved to grant the Brahmin boy, Vamana, a donation. Disobeying the guru's words was about to prove a grave mistake, for that Brahmin boy was actually Lord Vishnu himself, who had descended to Earth to protect his devotees and establish righteousness.
Display of the Cosmic Form
As King Mahabali extended his hand to grant the donation to Vamana, Vamana's body began to grow rapidly. His form became so immense that he covered the entire palace in an instant. The king and his courtiers trembled with astonishment and fear. He was no longer a boy, but Lord Vishnu, radiant and filled with boundless power. His divine radiance blinded everyone. King Mahabali closed his eyes, but imprinted the image of that wondrous form in his heart. "O Lord," the king said in his mind, "you have granted me your vision, I am blessed."
"Mahabali," Vishnu said in a thundering voice, "you have promised to grant me three steps of land. Now let me receive that land." His voice was like the roar of thunderclouds, shaking everything. The gods, too, were watching this wondrous spectacle from the heavens, and they were chanting victory for Lord Vishnu. King Mahabali, though a little frightened, remained steadfast in his promise.
Measuring the Earth and Heaven
Lord Vishnu took his first step, and in an instant, he measured the entire Earth. Mountains, rivers, oceans, forests – everything was encompassed beneath his foot. Then he took his second step, and this time he measured the heavens as well. The celestial realm, Indra's throne, everything came within his second step. Now the question was, where would he place his third step? King Mahabali and his courtiers were bewildered. They had no answer, no solution.
Lord Vishnu's grace was immense. He gave Mahabali the opportunity to become his devotee and renounce his ego. This was not just a measurement of land, but a measurement of the heart, a measurement of devotion. The Lord wanted to see how true Mahabali was to his word, and whether he was ready to relinquish his ego?
Mahabali's Surrender
When Lord Vishnu asked where to place his third step, King Mahabali bowed his head without any hesitation. He said, "O Lord, I have nothing left now. Please place your third step on my head." His eyes were filled not with fear, but with reverence. He had dedicated his entire existence to the Lord. He had realized that true charity is not of material possessions, but the surrender of oneself.
Seeing Mahabali's surrender, Lord Vishnu was extremely pleased. He recognized the truth and sacrifice of his devotee. This was his test, and Mahabali had succeeded. Lord Vishnu humbly placed his third step on Mahabali's head and sent him to the netherworld, but also blessed him that he would reign there and his fame would remain immortal for ages to come.
Summary of Chapter 6: In this chapter, Lord Vishnu displayed his cosmic form as Vamana and measured the Earth and heavens in two steps. King Mahabali surrendered his everything, teaching the lesson that true charity and devotion lie in renouncing ego. The next chapter will describe Mahabali's blessings and the establishment of his kingdom in the netherworld.
