Vamana Avatar Katha – Chapter 2: Aditi's Penance and Vamana's Birth
Aditi's Penance and the Birth of Vamana
In the previous chapter, we saw how Indra and other gods, terrified by the might of Mahabali, sought refuge in Lord Vishnu. Seeing the distress of the gods, Lord Vishnu assured them that he would protect them when the time was right. Now, the story continues with Aditi's penance and the birth of the Vamana avatar.
Inspiration from Sage Kashyapa
Aditi, the mother of the gods, was deeply distressed by the plight of her sons. Heaven had become devoid of gods due to Mahabali's tyranny, and her sons were wandering here and there. Tears welled up in her eyes, and her heart yearned to re-establish her sons in heaven. She sat in the ashram of Sage Kashyapa, lost in deep thought. The peaceful atmosphere of the ashram could not calm her inner turmoil. A cool breeze was blowing, birds were chirping, but nothing felt pleasant to Aditi.
Sage Kashyapa sensed Aditi's distress and affectionately asked, "Aditi, why is your mind so restless? What is it that is troubling you so much?" Aditi, weeping, described the pitiable condition of her sons and said, "O Lord, I cannot bear to see my sons in this humiliating state. Is there no way by which we can defeat Mahabali and regain heaven?" Sage Kashyapa said in a grave tone, "Aditi, only penance is the path by which you can fulfill your desire. Worship Lord Vishnu; only he can help you."
The Vision of Lord Vishnu
Following Sage Kashyapa's advice, Aditi decided to undertake severe penance. Every day, she would wake up before sunrise, bathe, and become engrossed in devotion to Lord Vishnu. For many days, she subsisted only on fruits and water, and then gradually began to perform penance without food. The fire of her penance made the three worlds tremble. There was a stir even in the heavens. Finally, Lord Vishnu was pleased with Aditi's penance and appeared before her in a divine form. His radiance was so intense that Aditi's eyes were dazzled.
Lord Vishnu smiled and said, "Aditi, I am very pleased with your penance. What is your desire? I promise you that I will fulfill your wish." Aditi, joining her hands, humbly said, "O Lord, I only wish to free my sons from Mahabali's tyranny. Please help me and restore them to heaven." Lord Vishnu said, "Aditi, I know your suffering. I will be born from your womb in the form of Vamana and will help your sons. Be assured."
The Birth of Vamana
By the grace of Lord Vishnu, Aditi became pregnant. Her radiance grew day by day. When the auspicious time arrived, on the twelfth day of the waxing moon in the month of Bhadrapada, under the Shravana constellation, Lord Vishnu took birth from Aditi's womb in the form of Vamana. He was a Brahmin boy, dark in complexion, and adorned with yellow garments. He held a staff and a water pot in his hands. His birth filled the three worlds with joy. The gods and sages began to praise him.
With the birth of Vamana, a new ray of hope dawned among the gods. Now they knew that their sorrows were about to end. Aditi, holding her son in her lap, forgot all her hardships. The story now continues with Vamana's divine teachings and his meeting with Mahabali.
Summary of Chapter 2: In this chapter, we saw how Aditi, inspired by Sage Kashyapa, performed penance to protect her sons. Lord Vishnu, pleased, appeared before her and granted her the boon of being born as Vamana. This chapter teaches us that through true devotion and penance, God can be attained, and liberation from all sufferings can be achieved.
