Parashurama Avatar Story – Chapter 2: The Incident of Kamadhenu
The Incident of Kamadhenu
In the previous chapter, we heard the wondrous tale of Parashurama's birth. Now, we will focus on the unfortunate events that transpired in the peaceful ashram of Sage Jamadagni and Renuka, which would forever change Parashurama's life. These events would later become the cause of Parashurama's wrath and his resolve to annihilate the Kshatriyas.
The Arrival of Kartavirya Arjuna
The ashram of Maharshi Jamadagni and Mother Renuka was situated on the banks of the Narmada River. Dense forests surrounded it, and the atmosphere was filled with peace. The sound of Vedic chants echoed in the ashram, and the fragrance of Agnihotra (fire ritual) sanctified the surroundings. Sage Jamadagni was living a contented life with his wife Renuka and his sons. Mother Renuka was known for her extraordinary power of chastity. It was by her grace that the Kamadhenu cow, the fulfiller of all desires, resided in the ashram. One day, Sahasrabahu Arjuna, also known as Kartavirya Arjuna, arrived at Sage Jamadagni's ashram with his vast army while hunting. He was intoxicated with his power and arrogance. He was surprised to see the peaceful environment of the ashram.
"What kind of forest is this, where sages and ascetics reside with such tranquility? I see no fear here," Kartavirya Arjuna said to his commander. "No matter, Maharaj, we will use this forest for our rest. Inform the sages of our arrival."
The Abduction of Kamadhenu and the Murder of Jamadagni
Sage Jamadagni welcomed Kartavirya Arjuna and offered him food according to his means. Due to the influence of the Kamadhenu cow, he provided excellent hospitality to the king and his army. Kartavirya Arjuna was astonished to see that a sage possessed such extraordinary power. Greed entered his mind. He thought that such a cow should belong to a king. Blinded by greed, he demanded the Kamadhenu cow from Jamadagni. When the sage refused, Kartavirya Arjuna, in anger, forcibly snatched the Kamadhenu cow and took it with him. When Sage Jamadagni protested, Kartavirya Arjuna ordered his soldiers to attack the sage. The soldiers struck Sage Jamadagni with swords and killed him. Mother Renuka, wailing, ran and called out to her son Parashurama.
The divine play of Lord Vishnu is immeasurable. He had given this power to Sage Jamadagni so that the arrogance of Kartavirya Arjuna could be destroyed. This incident would give birth to Parashurama's wrath, which would lead to the annihilation of Kshatriyas from the Earth. Without the will of Lord Vishnu, not even a leaf can move.
The Beginning of Parashurama's Revenge
When Parashurama received the news of his father's death from his mother, his anger reached its peak. He vowed to avenge this injustice and rid the Earth of wicked Kshatriyas. The act of snatching the Kamadhenu cow and the murder of Jamadagni began a new chapter in Parashurama's life, filled with anger and retribution. After this incident, he went with his mother to Mahishmati and challenged Kartavirya Arjuna to a battle.
Summary of Chapter 2: In this chapter, we saw how the greed and arrogance of Kartavirya Arjuna led to the murder of Sage Jamadagni. This incident becomes the cause of Parashurama's wrath and his resolve to destroy the Kshatriyas. It teaches us that greed and arrogance have destructive consequences.
