Vaishno Devi Katha – Chapter 1: Vaishnavi's Birth and Background

Vaishnavi's Birth and Background
In a kingdom nestled in the lap of the Trikuta mountain, with picturesque views, reigned King Ratnakar. The subjects were happy with him, and prosperity prevailed in the kingdom, but the king harbored a deep sorrow – he had no children. This sorrow gnawed at him from within, and he decided to pray to God for a son.
King Ratnakar's Penance
King Ratnakar renounced his kingdom and went into the dense forest. He began a rigorous penance. Day and night, he worshipped Lord Vishnu, absorbed in meditation. Whether it was scorching heat or biting cold, he did not let his penance waver. His body burned in the fire of penance, but his mind was calm in contemplation of God. Birds chirped around him, animals roamed fearlessly, as if they knew this devotee was only meditating on God.
King Ratnakar spoke to himself, "O Lord Vishnu, grant me a son. I know I must have committed many sins in past lives, but my only desire is to leave an heir for my subjects. I humbly pray to you, accept my prayer.” His heart was filled with love and devotion for God.
Lakshmi's Birth as Vaishnavi
Pleased by King Ratnakar's penance, Goddess Lakshmi appeared. She gave darshan to the king and said, "O King Ratnakar, I am extremely pleased with your penance. Your devotion is wonderful. I know you desire a son, but destiny has other plans. I myself will be born in your house as a daughter. That daughter will be unique; the Adi Shakti will reside in her." Hearing this, King Ratnakar's joy knew no bounds.
When the time came, King Ratnakar's wife gave birth to a beautiful daughter. The daughter's face had a divine radiance, as if the rays of the sun were shining. King Ratnakar named the daughter Vaishnavi. She was an avatar of Goddess Lakshmi, who had come to establish Dharma on Earth and to liberate devotees. The birth of Vaishno Devi brought a ray of hope for the devotees, a sign that God always protects his devotees.
Vaishnavi's Childhood and Divine Signs
Vaishnavi's childhood was different from other girls. She was religious-minded from childhood. She remained absorbed in devotion to God and helped the poor and needy. She possessed extraordinary knowledge and had studied the Vedas and Puranas at a young age. Vaishnavi was a vast ocean of kindness, compassion, and love.
As Vaishnavi grew a little older, she began to receive many divine signs. She gained knowledge of the future and was able to liberate people from their sorrows. She told her parents that her life was for a special purpose, and she would soon depart to fulfill that purpose. In the next chapter, we will learn how Vaishnavi left her home and began her spiritual journey.
Summary of Chapter 1: Pleased by King Ratnakar's penance, Goddess Lakshmi incarnated as Vaishnavi. Vaishnavi was extraordinary from childhood and began receiving divine signs. From this chapter, we learn that God can be attained through true devotion and faith.
