Sita Katha – Chapter 2: Sita's Childhood

Childhood of Sita

In the previous chapter, we heard the story of the divine birth of Goddess Sita. Emerging from the earth, she came into the life of King Janak as a divine gift. Now, we will see how she was raised, what education she received, and how her nature made her unique.

Beloved Sita in Mithila

Sita was raised with immense love and affection in the palace of King Janak. Queen Sunayana accepted her as her own daughter and provided her with all the comforts of the world. Everyone in the palace was captivated by Sita's beauty and serene nature. Her eyes were like lotuses, and her speech was filled with nectar. Sita, as if Lakshmi herself had descended in Janakpuri.

Queen Sunayana would often hold Sita in her lap and say, "My beloved, you are more beautiful than even the gods. Your arrival has brought spring into our lives." And King Janak, upon seeing Sita, would forget all his sorrows. He felt as if some divine power was giving him strength.

Education of a Princess

King Janak made special arrangements for Sita's education. She was imparted knowledge of the Vedas, Puranas, history, and politics. Sita quickly learned everything from her teachers. Her intellect was sharp, and her memory was astonishing. Not only this, but she also gained proficiency in martial arts. She knew how to wield a sword, use a bow and arrow, and drive a chariot. Sita was both a warrior and a scholar.

Once, when Guru Vishwamitra visited Janakpuri, he saw Sita and said, "King, your daughter is the embodiment of divine power. She will protect dharma in the times to come." Sita bowed to Guru Vishwamitra and received his blessings. All the sages were amazed by Sita's wisdom and humility. Her grace always remained upon Janakpuri.

Sita's Nature and Compassion

Sita's nature was extremely simple and kind. She was always ready to help the poor and helpless. While wandering in the palace gardens, she would become distressed upon seeing injured birds and animals and would tend to them. Sita never caused pain to anyone. Her heart was filled with love and compassion.

One day, Sita saw a poor woman shivering from the cold. She immediately took off her valuable shawl and gave it to her. The woman blessed Sita and said, "Goddess, you are the very image of mercy." This was Sita's identity – full of kindness, compassion, and love. In every action of hers, there was a sense of dharma and justice.

The Arrival of Rama

The story of Sita's childhood ends here. Sita is now growing into a young woman, her beauty and fame spreading in all directions. Now is the time for a significant turning point in her life. Soon, Prince Rama of Ayodhya will arrive in Janakpuri. He will participate in the Dhanush Yajna and await Sita's Swayamvara. This meeting is destined by fate, and it will mark the beginning of a new chapter.
